Backtracking??

Hello all
I just wanted to know if it is considered backtracking when you do it within a continent like would I be able to fly from SYD-LAX spend some time in LA and then fly from LAX-NYC spend some time in NY and then fly from NYC-SAN and spend some time in SD then fly from SAN-MAI then fly MAI-SFO. Then back to Europe where I started the RTW???

Sort of. You are only allowed one transcontinental sector, and you have more than 3 stops, but otherwise it would be fine. So you could go syd-lax-nyc*-dfw-san*-dfw-lax*-europe, where the * represent stops. lax-jfk would be your transcon.
