Cancelled flights

A friend was scheduled to fly to London on BA, connecting to Aer Lingus. Just before leaving home, BA called to say that their flight to London was cancelled. That meant that he would miss his connection on Aer Lingus.

BA said that they would offer no compensation for the cancelled flight or for the missed connection! I thought that the whole point of the airline alliances is to allow for a seemless transfer of passengers between partners. This is certainly NOT the case.

Does he have any options? Is he standing on shaky ground?

You would need to provide more details for a fair assessment. What was the reason of the BA flight cancel? Was it weather? If not, what exactly was the cause? Was your friend on one single itinerary, or was he on two seperate tickets? What kind of ticket did your friend have? What level of "compensation" are you asking for? Is an alternative flight that will eventually deliver your friend to the final destination not enough? Are you asking for hotel bills and other expenses occured due to the delay? Or are you asking for money or miles as an apology?

No offense, but while BA may have done something wrong, we won't be able to say so unless we know what really happened.

It was a mechanical delay. Fortunately, a very helpful Lingus employee rebooked him without a problem. He was travelling on an award ticket.

With the busy season, he was concerned that he would be languishing in London for Xmas, with no one helping him to get home in time. He did not want any compensation, per se, just to get to his destination.
