The redemption levels depend on the total number of miles that you wish to travel, unlike the paid Explorer product which is continent-based. Information on this award is available in the "Using Miles" section of http://www.aa.com/aadvantage/

This would, of course, depend on which 1w carrier your miles are in. Given your location, I will assume AA.
As far as I can tell, 1w Explorers are not available for miles. However, they do have mileage-based awards. You must fly at least two non-AA carriers as part of the trip (keep in mind that CP is only in until the end of May, and that Iberia has a pretty bad reputation compared to the rest of the group). There are blackout dates on AA around Thanksgiving and Christmas, and first/business between Sydney and LAX on Qantas is always blacked out (LAX to Melbourne or Auckland is limited to Fridays up front, but no limit on the reverse).
As for the number of miles--it is 120/150/230 for a 25k-mile itinerary, 140/190/280 for 35k, and 160/220/330 for 50k. No combining US Airways miles for this one.

johnndor: happy travels! I just booked a OW ticket with AA for for this coming July/August. One key thing I learned - distance measured is between origin and destination, regardless of where you connect. So, one of my flights is Rome to Bangkok, connecting in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is actually further away, but the distance measured is only Rome to Bangkok as if it were nonstop. Use the mileage estimator that's on WebFlyer for help with this.
The other thing I learned is that only one "open jaw" is allowed. I had wanted to have four in my itinerary.
So, to net it out, plan carefully!
Silverpie: I don't think it's -always- blacked out, is it? For my upcoming trip, there were one or two days that the SYD-LAX segment was available, but the connection from CNS-SYD was oddly not. So, my routing instead is CNS-NRT-ORD (which is fine 'cause final destination is BOS, plus I have to overnight in NRT - 23 hours of sushi!).

It's a strange one--I did misread. The permanent blackout of first and business on the LAX<->SYD route only applies to Qantas 11 and 12 (not even QF 7 and 8).
