Upgrades on Quantas?

Ha anyone ever been upgraded being an Executive Platinum/OneWorld Emerald on the HNL-SYD-HNL portion on Quantas?
How full are those flights in J class and what are the success rates?

Regards,
Empress

Empress - Qantas uses 747-400 aircraft on some of these flights and thus they do have a First Class section. But I do not know who gets to sit there - mainly their Qantas Gold members first and then maybe CP Emerald.

QF hardly upgrades anyone from Y to J. Irrespective of status. But they do tend to favor their Gold members first.

Empress:

Try to book a seat on row 1-4 before the flight if flying business class.

I took a freebie on CP in Feb. '96. The QF plane from HNL-SYD was supposed to be a 747-200 with J/Y but a -300 with P/J/Y was used instead so I got a P seat (had row 4 which is the last row in P). I was but a mere CP Club member at that time and QF didn't reassign seats on me.

Tried that on the way back but the plane was a -200 as was the 747 in Nov. '96

3 rules if you want to be upgraded on Qantas.
1. Learn to spell the name of the airline.
2. Register your status as emerald, and do it again in the first class lounge when you arrive there.
3. Be very polite and not pushy -- 'tis not Amerikan!
If unsuccessful, join the crowd of us Qantas Gold, who very, very rarely get upgrades, and then only for "operational" reasons.
Good luck!
