Be careful about this....there are 2 such fares floating about.
One is the Global Explorer fare offered by CX/AA/CP/QF/BA/IB/AY/LA/FJ. This is based on mileage and is available from most countries in all classes. However, some countries are only marketing this in economy class only. The maximum permitted mileage is 28,500 miles.
The other is the OneWorld Explorer Fare which is based on the number of continents travelled. Fares vary.
Where are you based? And where are you willing to go to start your journey? Remember that your fare is based upon which country you start the journey. You CANNOT issue a ticket based on say, a Korean fare , which is lower than a US fare and you start your journey from the USA.

Currently the cheapest place to buy the oneworld Explorer fare is Korea. The most expensive is the UK. Celestar is correct regarding country of purchase and originating sector.

Celestar340 -- I'm based in Denmark.
I thought that the Explorer ticket would be a fairly painless way of getting the 100k bonus in six programs, but with only 3 "built-in" stops per continent, I see now that it would be a lot cheaper to just purchase individual tickets. Any ideas? Here's what I'm thinking:
CPH-HEL
HEL-TKU
TKU-HEL
HEL-TKU
TKU-HEL
HEL-CPH
1 Finnair credit X 6 programs
As for the other airlines, I'm not sure what to do. Doesn't British Airways codeshare on some Maersk flights here in Denmark? Would they count for the 100k bonus?

Flying Dutchman - It would be very hard pressed for you to attempt getting 100K each in 6 different programmes within Europe. As you have might read on other posts, only Asia can achieve the 5 carriers quite easily, as Finnair, Canadian (though till end of 99), British Airways, and Qantas have full Fifth Freedom traffic rights within Asian cities.
In Europe, you would have only BA, AY , IB and CX. You are still short of one airline to make the 100K.
The 3 city rule is for stopovers only. There is generally a 4 sector rule, meaning a connection is not counted as a stopover. Except within asia is 5 sectors, and North America when it is 6 sectors.
Maersk Air flights are permitted as long as it is a BA flight number. Basically Maersk Air is almost owned by BA anyway!
I'm attempting all 7 programmes (maybe 8), and that alone is difficult on just one RTW ticket. (I'm doing a 4 Continent ) I have to do some extra sidetrips within asia between now and then. Still it would be interesting to see how I fare by years' end.
Good luck in your quest.

FD - I am currently looking at a Oneworld RTW for January 2000. Current cheapest business class looks like Italy with a 1000 GBP saving under the equivalent BA UK price. Might be worth a look
Sorry, forgot to state I am only looking at ex Europe starts, can any one beat Italy for European based purchase?
