latest start date for RTW ticket

a friend of mine wants to lock down two still relatively cheap ex-africa rtw tickets, and we want to book the 2nd start date as late as possible. as for today, we can book our first flight on the August 9th, 2017. we were wondering if we can push the first flight further down the road when other dates start getting available?
if so, would you be able to push a trip indefinitely? feels weird if you could, but on the other hand there is no downside to the airlines.

No, if you move the first flight you will trigger a re-price. Lock the first date as far out as possible (usually 330 days) and put dummy dates for the remaining flights. The problem usually is that although the rules allow open dates for segments, I know AA (not sure about others) won't ticket without actual dates. So, that means the last flight, not the first, needs to be 330 days out. After the first flight you have 365 days to complete the trip.

What skunker says is true

However, if the price has not increased since you bought it, then yes you can change the date of the first flight without penalty.

You cannot "push a trip indefinitely". The airlines' General Conditions of Carriage normally state that the first flight must be within one year of the original ticketing date. For example the BA conditions state:

That's true; however, given the rate at which the metical is falling, and has been for quite some time, I would expect another reprice at some point, or, worse for us, a switch to pricing ex-MPM tickets in USD.

What you can do: book a very short RTW. First sector what you need, the rest just to get you around this planet quickly (330 days before the last of your flights). Later leave the first flight but change to your real routing (you pay the fee but that way you can lock in the price).

Be aware that in case of a refund you will get the money back in the original currency. If there is a decline you will have to eat the difference, if the currency goes up you might win.

What is the source of the information?

This was definitely the case before the rtw tickets could have been bought outside country of the origin with fare of the origin.

However, now when it's possible to pay RTW tickets in different currencies it may be handled differently. At least AA is stating that refund is calculated from equivalent fare in currency mentioned in tix and also paid to airline, not the original fare currency.

I'm still not very sure about the information as the AA agents I dealt with haven't had the knowledge themselves, they have needed to ask from rating team. I don't trust that the refunds team would interpret the rules similarly than rating desk, but I don't have better information. At least two different AA agents was saying the same thing, but that doesn't mean anything.

I'm personally interested about the issue as I still have two exMPM DONE5 tix and I would need to cancel one in some point. My travel plans are still not very clear, so I would like to hold both tickets closer time, if the value is tied to equivalent fare in USD, but if value is tied to original fare in MZN then I would need to cancel one immediately. I tried to ask this in another thread before, but didn't get certain answer.

My experience in the past: RTW from JNB bought thru a TA in Europe. Both credit in case of a return of the ticket or adding continents later was done in the original currency (ZAR) and then converted at the day of return/purchase the additional continents. The tickets were issued in ZAR.

Hopefully somebody else has more 'real life' experience. What is the currency AA is issuing the tickets in? That should be the currency for the refund.

Thanks for pointing that out. It's clear now how the refund calculation should work. Always got more knowledgeable responses from here compared to airline agents.

So, based upon the AA tariff listed above, a ticket purchased in the USA from AA has a fixed exchange rate for 7 days. Why did the ex-MPM fares change on a Monday last month?
