I have what is probably a really stupid question but I've read through this thread and asked the BAEC the same question and I'm still confused so I'm hoping the good folk at FT can set me straight!

I am booked on a single PNR LHR-GRU-BSB return using BA between LHR and GRU and LATAM between GRU and BSB. Will I have to reclaim my bags at GRU on both or either of the outbound/return legs?

I asked the same question of the BAEC and got this response which I can't make head or tail of!

Thank you for your email to the Club enquiring about baggage through check.

As your journey is wholly with British Airways or oneworld alliance airlines, your baggage will be through-checked to your final destination.

Your baggage will be labelled through to your onward flight destination and you will be given a boarding pass for your next flight. You do not have to pick up your bags and check in again. Simply follow the Flight Connections signs and make your way to the relevant terminal.

However, if your baggage receipt shows the destination ‘LHR’, ‘LGW’ or ‘LON’ then you must collect your baggage at Arrivals/Baggage Reclaim before checking in for your next flight.


It is the bit about LHR tags that has thrown me - does it mean that I don't have to pick up my baggage at GRU on the way out to BSB but that I do need to do so on the way back from BSB?

I'm so confused, hopefully someone more experienced with flying in this part of the world/travelling with luggage (I am normally HBO) can set me straight...TIA!

Looks like BA replied to a question you did not ask. "Flight connections" is at LHR/LGW (nothing surprising there)

Not sure about immigration procedures at GRU, Brazil, but for many countries at your first port of entry (GRU) you go through immigration & customs with all your carry on and checked baggage and then check in/bag drop for your onward domestic flight.

I'll pick up my bag and do immigration etc in GRU as you suggest. Thank you so much for setting me straight!

Trying to figure out the best strategy here. We've got the following booked for our honeymoon:

AKL - MEL (QF J)
Departs AKL 12pm, Arrives MEL 3pm

MEL - NRT (JL J)
Departs MEL 1205am Arrives NRT 9am

Here is where it gets tricky the first two flights (above) are on the same PNR (AA award). We are then connecting to another JL flight on an AS award:

NRT - ORD (JL F)
Departs 10:50am

What is my best strategy here? Obviously the ideal outcome is for it to be checked all the way from AKL to ORD but we definitely need them checked MEL - ORD in order to eliminate any connection issues.

Given the 9 hour layover at MEL, would QF short-check to MEL? I'm pretty certain that JL would be willing to check across PNRs since MEL - NRT - ORD is on all JL metal (and is J --->F) but I'm concerned that QF is going to throw a wrinkle in our plans here.

This is probably your best option. Just mention that you need the bag at MEL to give something to someone or another reason like this. You should be fine.

I'm looking at a QF fare between Sydney and Jakarta. The return flight CGK-SYD departs at 7pm and I'm looking at arriving into CGK with MH from KUL at 5.30pm on a separate ticket. Is 90 minutes sufficient for MH to check me through from KUL to SYD? This is the information from ExperFlyer:

Looking at FlightStats for today's flight, it looks as though both MH and QF flights use terminal 3U. However, the QF website says it uses terminal 3 while MH uses 2D (https://www.qantas.com/travel/airlin...arta/global/en).

The oneline/offline are defaults and are only representative if the combination is not superseded in a following entry.

You will need to clear immigration at FRA after your DFW-FRA flight. And probably customs (baggage) as well. Or maybe customs in GOA. Others know a lot more about Eu immigration & customs procedures & checking in for LH flights.

I think I know the answer (NO). However I feel perhaps fellow FTers can confirm (or not).

I have a long layover at KUL. Incoming flight on MH from BOM and connecting to JL to NRT. Any chance of getting my checked bag all the way to NRT?

Also, which is my KLIA arriving terminal and JL deaparting terminal? Air side international to international transfer OK?

The term "connecting" usually means 2 or more flights on the same PNR. If you have separate PNR's you are not connecting. A PNR can have 2 or more tickets.

My flights (BOM-KUL by MH) and (KUL-NRT by JL) are on 1 PNR, with a less than 24 hours layover at KUL. Both flights are in business cabin.
