Crap policy anyway the alliances had to end some day. So what you get is the points and the lounge ANY other benefits ?
Flying tomorrow Finnair and then Qatar. Tickets were issued May 2016. So will see . But they should have informed the regulars.

Given that there has been some "movement" on through checking when one PNR is an award and the second is "paid", has there been an example of this with QR? If not, what would the recommended layover time in DOH to connect from a QR paid flight to a QR award flight(without major panic)? Four hours?

My family and I will soon be flying SEA-(AA Z-class)-LAX-(AA Z-class)-HKG-(CX C-class)-KUL. Our ultimate destination is LGK (Langkawi). We're looking at purchasing a ticket on an MH flight KUL-LGK that departs an hour after the CX KUL-HKG flight arrives.

The 1-hour connection is legal for MCT, but too short for me to go through immigration/customs, wait for our bags/baby seats to arrive, then recheck them for the MH KUL-LGK flight.

Understanding the new (crappy) policy, is there any chance anybody along the way will let us check the bags all the way to LGK (2 separate PNRs - one award, one paid)? I understand the AA agent at our origin point (SEA) may not allow it, but perhaps the transfer desk or FC lounge at HKG may be able to help?

It would be a shame to lose a day in Langkawi only because of this unfriendly policy (the KUL-LGK flight we could take is the final flight of the night).

CX will absolutely not check through to a different PNR unless CX. Not sure what the position with AA is now, since things seem to have changed a few times.

Also, even if there was a chance that it will work, since it is against published policy no-one here can guarantee say for sure that it will. So you end up risking everything being screwed up on the day, and little time to put things right (like cancelling the 1st night hotel if you simply miss your connection).

I fully agree Justinus. Currently sitting in HEL Schengen lounge for extra three hours. I had QR flights CPT-DOH-HEL. Connecting flight to OUL, with separate PRO ticket. According to recommendation of Plat CC, I booked my OUL flight to 12:00 flight, since with PRO ticket I can change it to 9:05 flight if DOH flight is not delayed. DOH flight was on time, I was in good time in the check in desk, but OUL flight was fully booked.


So, due to the OW decision, my total door-to-door travel time will be nice 27:30 hours instead of 24 hours :(


So, I agree, a good number of frequent travelers does not see benefit to have OW for all legs of the travel. Through-checking at least for FF's, please.

It is far from clear from that link, but it appears Star Alliance will still check bags through on separate tickets as long as all carriers are Star Alliance member and may (or may not) check them through if the separate ticket is on a non-Star Alliance carrier.

Confirmed, Cx not checking through. So bad

Just for reference, HEL to AUH separate ticket , no check through ,when approach transfer desk in DOH , they do something and check through. Back from AUH , check in agent did almost 10 min , it check through to HEL in AY and QR flight. 😰 I don't expect this happen all the time.

Checking through baggage on One World
 

Has anyone encountered the new One World policy whereby One World Alliance members refuse to check through baggage if the tickets are not issued under one booking number? In my case, I bought a Cathay special offer of 2 long haul and one short haul business bundle. I was not allowed the same destination for the long haul so I took one to London and one to Zurich. I am spending 12 days in Europe, 7 in Zurich and 5 in London and need to fly on a separately booked ticket ZH/LHR since the bundle ticket did not allow me to book an extra leg to London, and Marco Polo are telling me that BA will not check my bag through to HK when I check in from London to connect to my HK flight from Zurich. Specifically they said I have to go through immigration in Zurich, claim my bags, go through customs, exit and go back to check in at the Cathay counter with my luggage. Seems they are actively discouraging using their alliance partners if you cannot check your bag through. This policy has been in place since June 2016. This is neither logical nor in the spirit of any alliance! Does Star Alliance have the same policy?

It is normal for bags not to be interlined across different tickets/PNRs to other carriers.

Airlines can interline in such cases if they chose to, but doing so brings extra risk to them in the case of irregular ops (such as a delay causing you to miss the next flight) that they aren't 'paid' for.

Through check across tickets was an unpublished benefit of oneworld for quite some time, until it was removed a few months ago, seemingly at the requirement of BA.

This removal of the oneworld policy returns the alliance to the industry standard and carriers are no longer required to connect you or your baggage to the next flight if they are on different tickets.

The carrier can check through to other tickets, if they chose to. for example, CX will check through to other CX/KA tickets, but not to other oneworld carriers. QF will check to itself and EK, and will only check to OW on different tickets if one is an award.
BA and QR wouldn't even check through to themselves.
JL and UL will still check through as per the old policy.

The other alliances, will also not officially check through across tickets. Though as with oneworlds current policy, the member airlines can choose to do so.

The other alliances don't actually have an 'official' policy in interlining bags. But interlining bags is actually up to the individual airline of whether they will do it.

But Oneworld decided to initiate this and BA is now very strict with this and will not even interline their own flights if they are on separate tickets. CX will tnly interline with CX/KA on separate tickets and I guess they didn't tell you that they too will not interline with anyone else (whether Oneworld or not) if its on a separate ticket.

So ya, you'd have to go through immigration, pick up your bags and then check in with CX. And you better check your baggage allowance with BA inter-europe. Its usually only one 23kg bag in economy.
