Waitlisting DONEx on AA A

We have an AA HNL-DFW on our DONEx itinerary and there is no availability in A. 8 hours in domestic red-eye economy doesn't sound like great fun.

There are plenty of flights with F7 and P7 availability so can we simply put ourselves on a waitlist for such a flight? What are the odds for it clearing? (Not familiar with AA's priorities)

As AA ATW desk managed to remove the HNL-DFW from our itinerary the last time I changed dates, I am considering also the option to leave it missing from the DONEx and do the HNL-(xxx)-DFW on our own.

Is there any A available on alternative flights?

HNL can be tough for A at times, but there are a few flights.

When is the travel?

Oddly enough, IME while AA does open up award space closer to flight time, A space rarely opens up. A certain number of seats are allocated to A and I can't recall any ever opening up after they are exhausted.

A is also a mileage upgrade bucket for AAdvantage members, so it gets soaked up quickly.

It was A0 for all flights (twice a day) in September and October. Typically half-full cabin with plenty of F and P available.

Luckily AA noticed that a flight had been lost on the ticket due to an agent error and offered free rerouting.
