For context, I'm based in Europe and have no status with AA or BA.
I have a trip booked and I *think* it makes most sense to credit the flights to BA. I think the points seem to go further under the BA program than the AA program, if I have it worked out correctly.
Flights are booked with USAirways and entirely on AA metal.
DUB->JFK (Fare: I)
JFK->LAX (Fare: I)
LAX->KOA (Fare: P)
And the same reverse route / fareclass.
Flights were booked in June and fly in September.

If you sign up for AA's Platinum Challenge you'd end up as AA Platinum (Oneworld Sapphire) with 32,000+ spendable miles. As your flights would be in September, your status would last until the end of February 2017.
AA Plat gets you 100% mileage bonus, Oneworld lounge access on non-US domestic flights, additional baggage allowances, free advance seat selection on BA, yadda yadda.
You'd have enough tier points for BA Silver (OW Sapphire) but BA requires 4 BA-metal segments before the status is conveyed, and you'd have none with this itinerary.

What are your intended redemptions, i.e., origin, destination, and class of service?
