DONE - Cheapest Starting Point

Hi All,

Newbie, but long time reader, of Flyertalk .... potentially have a 3 month break coming up and am thinking of doing a round the world trip. Am interested in taking in DXB, MEL, AKL, LAX, DFW, ORD.

I live near LHR, and am wondering where in the cheapest and best place to start a RTW journey. I can get a standby ticket anywhere in the world, so starting point is really a non issue. I am loyalty junkie and am BAEC Gold.

Really appreciate any advise you have !!

Cheers

Thanks Jerry !!!

I've been reading, and playing with the oneworld booking tool .... from what I've seen so far CAI is the cheapest starting point (working out at 6979 USD)

My journey is roughly

CAI-AMM-LAX-ORD-DFW-AKL-MEL-DXB-CAI

If anyone know how to make this trip cheaper through an alternative starting point, I love to hear it

I would suggest you subscribe to ExpertFlyer.
It will enable you to check pricing from a number of points, and also be invaluable in finding D class availabilty when you go to book.

At the moment I still think that ex JNB or CPT would be cheaper and would probably earn you more miles as well.

There is somewhere cheaper, but ticketing could be a pain.

MPM

Thanks Skunker - do you perhaps know what the base fare is for a DONE4 out of MPM? As I assume the initial flight would have to be on QR I will not be able to get a rate from the OW website and would have to go through QR to get a quote......which I have tried before with very little success.

Yes, first flight on QR which means you would have to ticket with them. I don't think the headache would be worth it to save the ~USD100 difference. But, from a cheapest base fare starting point MPM wins right now.

How does MPM compare on AONE4? Apologies for having to ask this here (gave up my EF subscription due to very limited travel these days).

Ex-South Africa it's USD $7,784 according to EF. For the $65 I'd much rather fly in and out of JNB than MPM. Just sayin'.

Plus, the first leg wouldn't be in F as it has to be on QR.

The difference is now about $300 on a DONE4. Might be worth it if someone wants to try.

That's not true, is it: I though that any OneWorld airline can ticket the itinerary, in principle; although whether they feel like it is another matter.
