Can I change from a Circle Trip Explorer to a DONE4?

I am looking at booking a 4 continent Circle Trip Explorer Ticket, South Africa - Europe - Hong Kong - Australia - South Africa.
However, there is a strong chance I may need to change it and go South Africa - Europe - United States - Australia - South Africa. I won't know until a few days before my intended travel date in July, I would like to book now because I don't want to miss out on certain sectors availability to Europe and around Europe.

My question is once I have paid for a Circle Trip Explorer can I have it changed to a DONE4?

This is from the Circle Explorer rules (my added bold.) Ought to be okay.

5. AT ANY TIME THE CIRCLE FARE MAY BE USED AS
CREDIT TOWARDS PAYMENT OF ANY HIGHER FARE FROM
THE POINT OF ORIGIN PROVIDED THE CONDITIONS
OF THE HIGHER FARE HAVE BEEN MET. NO FEE
APPLY. WHERE SUCH CREDIT IS TOWARDS ANOTHER
EXPLORER FARE
RETROACTIVE USE WILL BE PERMITTED.
REISSUED TICKETS MUST BE ENDORSED -- NONREF/XXX
-- XXX EQUALS CIRCLE TRIP EXPLORERE FARE BASIS
CODE -- AND THE ORIGINAL NON-REFUNDABLE AMOUNT
REMAINS NON-REFUNDABLE. IF THE UPGRADED TICKET
IS SUBSEQUENTLY CANCELLED THE ORIGINAL FEE
WILL APPLY.

So it may come down to whether an ex-South Africa DONE4 costs more than an ex-South Africa DONEWC4 (my added red)
IME they are often the same price

The base fare is the same.

My trip via the US will involve a higher price due to the fuel surcharges.

Thoughts on the changeability due to the same price?

My understanding of that rule is that changes from circle trips to RTW trips are possible, provided at the time the change is made, what has already been flown from the circle trip meets the rules of the RTW trip along with payment of any extra cost.

I'm not sure why the price affects the changeability other than as stated in the rule nonrefundable amounts remain nonrefundable. See also this thread where someone reported they successfully changed after the start of the trip:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/onewo...midtrip-2.html
And in this post a person reported that they changed a dcir26 to a dcir29 after the trip commenced:

I thought any change to an xONE type product before first flight resulted in refunding and starting over. My usual brain-dead misunderstanding?
