LONE3 - Flights after returning to country of origin

Hi,

A friend of mine is flying the following route for work and I am trying to help him maximise his LONE3.

HKG/LON/ZRH/LON/YYZ/NYC/YYZ/HKG

After he returns to HKG is he able to take an additional 2 flights within Asia i.e HKG-DPS-HKG to maximise his ticket and mileage?

I've seen the below on the OneWorld Website but don't quite get it.....

"You are allowed to take two stopovers in total within your continent of origin in order to get to or from a gateway to begin or return from your international travel of which a maximum of 1 stopover is permitted in each direction in the country of origin."

Thanks

No he cannot take additional flights; rule 4(f) is the killer:
Only one international departure and one international arrival from/to the country of origin permitted
So once he returns to HKG the ticket is over

Thanks,

In which case if went to for example TPE or NRT and then flew back to HKG on a separate ticket he could continue his ticket from TPE or NRT later?

Sure can
You are allowed up to four flight segments in Asia, and because it is the continent of origin - only two stopovers

If you stop in NRT and return home on a separate ticket, then NRT counts as one of the two allowed stopovers - so one stopover left, but four flight segments still available

Something like this might be attractive:
...NRT-xBKK-oCMB-xSIN-HKG, or
...NRT-oDEL-xBKK-xNRT-PVG
(this second to show that the itinerary can end in China - this is specifically allowed in the rules)

(x = transit, meaning strictly less than 24:00hrs from scheduled arrival to scheduled departure
o = stopover)

Note also that AA flies from the USA to PEK and PVG - so either of those could be your first Asian stopover

JL has a daily NRT-CAN flight

So the return from YYZ could be say ...YYZ-ORD-xNRT-oCAN-xNRT-oDEL-HKG
and presumably your friend can make his own way from CAN to HKG easily enough?

(I am assuming here that HKG and China are regarded as separate countries for the purpose of the "one departure from, one arrival to country of origin" rule)

That's a great idea! We were just debating whether NRT is feasible as it is quite expensive to get a HKG-NRT return so flying into CAN would be much easier as its a 45 minute train into HKG.

Could he go JFK-HKG-CAN also to reduce the connections and save a sector?

No, this would not be possible. Once you "touch" HKG the ticket is over, no matter if you plan a stopover or a simple transit in HKG (assuming Hong Kong and China are treated as separate countries, in which case HKG-CAN would be a second international departure from the country of origin which is not allowed).

Edit - rule 4 (d)

Travel may not be via the point of origin
No matter if China/Hong Kong are treated as one country or two: you cannot transit HKG since it is your point of origin.

There are different prices for starting points for a LONE3 - see this website:
http://www.wandr.me/RTW_Fares.aspx/ByProduct/LONE3

It could be better to just get a ticket to one of the cheaper places, HKG would be a stop and you still have 4 sectors from there.

Another idea:

Your friend could start from CAN instead of HKG

CAN-xHKG-LON-ZRH-LON-YYZ-NYC-YYZ-HKG
then later have a 3 segment intra-Asia trip with one stopover, ending in China
or HKG

perhaps
HKG-oDEL-xBKK-HKG or
HKG-oTPE-xNRT-PVG or
your original idea HKG-oDPS-HKG
- maybe with a final add-on HKG-oDPS-xHKG-PEK or anywhere else in China that CX/KA flies to

How does a LONE 3 cost for ex-CAN compare to ex-HKG? Never even thought of that........

ex-HKG LONE3 HKD28,460 plus all the add-ons
ex-CAN LONE3 CNY24,160 plus all the add-ons (approx HKD29,450)

So, a little bit more expensive but it has benefits
