oneworld worth it?

hey all, i have 160k but I work full time so i'm trying to understand the benefit to using the miles for a oneworld 35-50 mile award trip. The most I can get off from work at one time is 3 weeks..hardly enough time to travel 10-16 segments and enjoy it. Am I missing something or would it be smarter to use my miles indy? i.e. one trip to tokyo (50k), two trips to Europe (40k), one trip to china (70k)

just trying to understand the reasoning for using a 160k oneworld award travel unless you're retired or self employeed. i have enough miles with us airways to do south america or RT inside africa and i spent 55k w/united on an open leg to italy for 2012 so i've pretty much done everything besides africa and india at this point.

Depending on where you are starting from, you might be able to squeeze two or three separate trips out of a single oneworld award over the course of one year. While you cannot stop over at your origin or destination, you can stop over at a nearby city.

You don't say which program your miles are in so I can only surmise AA in which case this thread would be better off in the AA forum
One of the great benefits of a Oneworld Award over a standard award in almost all programs is the ability to have stopovers. In AA for example a standard award US-Europe allows LAX-JFK(stop)-LHR(no stop)-MAD. A one world award would allow LAX-LAS-ORD-SJU-MAD-HEL-BUD-ATH-LHR-BRU-JFK-DFW-HNL-LAX stopping at any point you wanted - but in 3 weeks all you might see is airports

can you shoot me over the rules guv1976? if i understood you correctly i can use oneworld travel over the course of a year instead of having to use it at the same time? I'd be traveling out of knoxville but i can drive to atlanta or nashville if it makes a difference in how far the reward goes.

The first post of the AA oneworld award sticky in the link provided by jerry a. laska does a much better job of summarizing the rules than I ever could.

Be sure to compare the cost (in miles, inconvenience, and ground transportation expense) of squeezing two or three trips out of a single oneworld award with the cost of booking the different trips with regular one-way awards.

If you were based in NYC, you could get to places like BOS, PHL, and WAS for $5 or $10 on Megabus or Bolt Bus; not sure what it will cost you to get from TYS to ATL or BNA.
