Help and tips for planning Aone6

Dear All,

Iam in the early stages of planning a aone6 and i would like to get some help and tips on possible stopovers etc.I choose the aone6 over flying in C although many segments will be flown in c because of the slight pric difference between them.So here is my current plant i will start in Cairo:

1.CAI-LHR-JNB
I will be doing side trips to Botswana and Madagaskar from SA
2.JNB-HKG
Besides HKG itselfs i also be doing side trips to Macau and Mongolia
3.HKG-Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city
I would like to have some advice on which city is the best to visit for afirst time visitor to Vietnam.
4.Vietnam-Tokyo
5.Tokyo-Sydney
Is flying via BKK with QF/BA really the only way the fly F on this route?
6.SYD-AKL
7.AKL-PPT
On seperate ticket
8.PPT-IPC
9.IPC-LIM or SCL
I would also like to have some input on this one, which of the 2 is worth a stop?
10 LIM/SCL-LAX
11 LAX-CAI

I would really like to hear some tips specially on Vietnam and South America and maybe also a second USA city on the way back to CAI

On price
ex-CAI DONE6 US$9160, AONE6 US$14117 so not that close, but all depends on your view of the importance of F.
On that routing - only 5 F segments (I think) is CAI-LHR-JNB,BKK-SYD,LAX-LHR-CAI

Tokyo-SYD. No F on NRT/HND-BKK. I would consider going via SIN instead so you can get F on the QF A380

In the US many choices - New York, Miami, Boston, San Fran...

You have been asking about Vietnam. Saigon is the business center, busy, noisy, crowded. Hanoi is government, still more the old communist mentality. Not a lot of things to do / see in the cities. Vietnam is good for traveling around. Halong, Hue, HoiAn, Nha trang etc. Nice beaches, countryside, good food. If you plan to spend only 2 or 3 days either Saigon (slight preference) or Hanoi can provide you with some first impression. If you stay longer then definitively travel around. Flights inside Vietnam are cheap, book on the Vietnam Airlines website to get the 'local' prices.

As said before your itinary is not really geared to the best First Class experience.You should try to maximize F sectors and good airlines.
If you did Tokyo as side trip from Hong Kong you could use QF Fto Australia.
CX has some flights with F to NRT, check if the JNB flight has F year around - not sure what the current status is.
Lan also has no F, you could go on QF to LAX, then AA to south America, and BA to Europe.
AA F sucks, it is not much better than LAN Business.

If you really want to fly in F (which with your original itinerary seems to be a bit of a waste) you should consider Star. More choices for F.
LH or LX Europe-South Africa, SQ to Asia, Australia. United (not much better than AA to the US and on to South America (or go back via SIN or NRT), LH or LX back to Europe.

Dear Unterwegs,

Thanks for your reply, i am leaning towards Saigon because i will be also going to Con Dao island and there is a direct flight from Saigon to there so that makes it a bit easier.I have been to Bangkok a couple of times should i think of Saigon a bit like that or is it completly different?

Regarding Star, i have looked into that but the problem with them is that their RTW is miles bases which makes it more restricted in routing and going east from Papeete is impossible or you have to backtrack to AKL to go to LAX.Plus one way prices on the PPT-LAX or PPT-IPC-SCL routes are double or more then the AKL-PPT sector.

Saigon has its own character and in many aspects is similar to Bangkok, but much less sightseeing places. Good food, but not as flavorful/spice as thai. Traffic is more like Bangkok 20 yeas ago, no subway system etc. The airport is close to the city and taxis are chap, but even for te around 7 km from the airport to the city it sometimes can take almost one hour. Several nice hotels, i prefer the Hyatt and the intercontinental, next is the Sofitel (because of the less central location).
A lot of nationalities still need a visa for Vietnam btw.

Consider starting in Riyadh. An AONE6 is only $11399USD. I'm currently on an AONE5 ex-RUH. Positioning flights were even cheaper to RUH than anywhere else in the "Middle East" region.

How does this work for visas to SA? I had read that they'll deny you entry, even for transit, if you could have avoided flying through country in any way (and I doubt they'd accept "it's cheaper").

I might start in Khartoum instead of Cairo because the price including taxes is only 8000 euros for aone6 plus a oneway ticket to KRT from Amsterdam is only 350 euros.I am just looking into the visa issue altough it will add some cost the much cheaper ticket prices makes it worthwhile, i wont be doing a transit it is to much hassle(possible delays etc) i will be staying in Khartoum a night or 2 at least i can say i have been to Sudan then lol

Visa is not that difficult if you have a hotel booking and the hotel is assisting you with an invitation letter.

I posted my experience starting my AONE5 in KSA in my trip report with a 72 hour visa, but I'll copy the description here. I didn't have much trouble, but obviously YMMV.

I first submitted my application in February, hoping to get it out of the way before I had to deal with other visa applications, such as for China and India. The first step when applying for any Saudi visa is to fill out an online form on a website run by a Saudi company called Enjaz. They require that you upload a photo of yourself, but I couldn't make the site work. I read that you needed to use Internet Explorer 6.0 on Windows XP and any other configuration would not work. I visited my old high school, where I used to work in the tech lab, and was able to find a computer matching those requirements. Unfortunately, I still couldn't get the site to upload my photo. In the end I had to pay Travisa $30 to do the Enjaz portion of the application for me. After completing that process I was to write a specific code on my paper application and then mail that in to the Saudi Embassy in D.C. Only three days after sending it off, I received a call from someone in their office asking me about the details of my trip, specifically about my same-plane-turn on the way back. I told him it was something my travel agent did and that I only wanted the visa for June visit. He said that the visas are only valid for 90 days, but would check with a supervisor to see if I could be granted an exception. He told me the answer was no, and I received my passport and forms back in the mail with a note saying to mail back four weeks before travel.

Four weeks before I was to leave, I mailed the same paperwork and my passport back to the Saudi Embassy and a few days later received a call from a woman at the Embassy. I spent a few days playing phone tag with her, which was quite difficult because I'm on Pacific time, and they are only open 8-12/2-5 eastern. I normally get up around 9 pacific and am in class during the 11-2 that they are open in the afternoon. Two days into phone tag I was transferred to the student and journalist visa desk and spoke to a very nice Saudi-American woman (or at least she had an American accent) who gave me her direct line and told me to call back the next day at a specific time and she would walk over to the office and make sure my visa was dealt with. When I woke up the next morning at 7 to make the phone call I had already received a phone call from my phone tag partner saying that she was mailing my application back if I didn't call her that day. Thankfully I got through to the second woman and we had a conference call where the first woman asked me again about the same plane turn around. I told her I was going to change that flight (which I actually might do) and she said alright, thank you. Four days later my passport showed up with the visa. Both times I was never asked why I wasn't taking the Royal Jordanian flight the night of my arrival (it was because there was no D inventory that night and I would have sat in Y), which is not consistent with many reports by people on this board. I guess I was just very lucky.
