Airline cancels 1st flight of DONE4. The consequences?

Hello there!

So this is the situation:
I have two confirmed 16 segment DONE4 tickets starting 3rd of Dec. First flight from HEL with AY. Now AY is cancelling flights because of strike. So far the flights are cancelled until the end of Dec 2nd. They refuse to reroute us because our flight is not cancelled yet. At the same time they say that the strike is likely going to last at least few more days.

I have a connecting flights, so at least 3 more flights has to change if I can't get to my connecting point (AMS). The rest of the flights I'd like to have unchanged.

So how does the system work? If they cancel my first flight, what happens to the rest of my flight segments? They get cancelled automatically or I can still keep the reservation on them?

At the moment there is availability on other airline to AMS, but AY wants to wait so I would guess rerouting is out of guestion by the time they make up their mind. And if I book that flight by myself I guess I can't get my money back anywhere?

Thanks!

Are those 3 flights part on the DONE4 ?

AY should protect you - reroute you, but always a risk they will not. I would be looking for alternative airlines-flights that you can suggest to AY

From a thread or two in the BA forum, it appears that AY has been accomodating travelers on other airlines the day of flight. If AMS truly is a connection you may be able to get AY to reroute you directly to your next stop (if that is preferably to you)and they should be responsible for reissuing your donex. If AY reroutes you correctly it shouldn't invalidate other segments (as might happen with a straight return ticket when you no-show for the first segment).

My Experience with CX

Several years ago in midst of DONE04, I had routing HKG-CMB-etc. However, d/t the civil war, Cathay stopped flying for a while. But they automatically rebooked me on an alternate airline (SQ that I remember). I actually just changed the routing (at no charge). Seems as though Finnair should do no less.

One approach is to book a flight on the other airline with "pay at the airport" option. When AY tells you that the flight is full, you can tell them that you are already booked, please arrange payment to XX.

Be sure to cancel the reservation if you no longer need them.

Thank you for the replies! Here's the update:

Our flight got officially cancelled and I could still find one alternative route that had availability. AY rerouted our first two segmets to that one without hassle ^
