Upgrading a DONE6
I recently purchased a DONE6 from BA originating from LHR. (Yes, I know I paid extra taxes... Please don't flame me.
Today I called BA about upgrading the first segment LHR-JNB and they told me that RTW tickets are NOT UPGRADABLE!! Is this a OW thing on all airlines or just a BA thing? I was very surprised.
Thoughts/experience?

Using money or using miles? As per rules, they are not upgradable using money, but IME they are upgradable using miles. Certainly on CX - never tried it on BA.
(Edit - I refer here to J-F upgrades (I've never done an LONEn). Y-J is not possible since L is no longer an upgradable booking class.)

AA allows upgrades with AA miles on AA (code share) flights. CX allows upgrades using their own miles (but only on CX metal and when ticketed by CX) and BA do not allow upgrades at all. You can upgrade the entire ticket with money though.
It is in the rulebook.

Is the OP trying to formally buy an A ticket for the LHR-JNB sector and leave the rest as issued in D? Or are they trying to use points to upgrade? The xONEx rules dont allow the former but there is nothing about the points upgrade in the rules.

If you purchased the Ticket from BA, not an agent, then you may be able to upgrade from D class on BA flights using your own BAEC miles.
More here: BAEC - Miles for Upgrade
(Interestingly, L class is not upgradeable)

... Miles for Upgrade is permitted on eligible British Airways published fares only (Fare classes are: J, C, D, R, I, W, E, T, Y, B, H) but is not permitted on bookings made with a travel agent. ...

Thanks for all the advise.
I'm sorry I wasn't clearer before.
I did purchase from BA and not an agent. I was hoping to use my BA miles to upgrade not pay the difference. The BA RTW agent said that none of the RTW fares could be upgraded with miles. I just found this strange.
CX is my next try. They just want a LOT more miles than BA for a 5500 mile journey. I'm a bit worried though because it's BA ticketed and not CX. I'll give it a try though.

Have you tried doing it yourself through MMB? Almost certainly won't work but worth a try. Next try calling BAEC directly and tell them you want to upgrade a D sector and cannot do it online. (Make sure there is Z availability first.) If you have the correct BA pnr I can't see why it wouldn't work.

If the OP's profile is correct they are falling foul of the last sentence in point 2 of the rules for MFU on BA.com?

EDIT: I have scanned the (new) OW site for the articles that support my claim but I can't find them now. Instead it states that BA allows redemption of miles on BA metal... I will try and talk to BAEC to see what they say.

Spoke to BA at length. They stick to the rules of the ticket, rulesheet 16.d.4
4) Upgrading by sector to Business/First class is not permitted.
Individual airlines are allowed to make exceptions. AA does, QF does. If the ticket complies with the usual MFU requirements you may have a chance, but these rules are quite strict...
