Really want to do something different this time visiting my family-in-law,

Anyone got any ideas where to go in Queensland?

Queensland is large. Larger than many Eu countries.
Where in QLD have you been before?
What are your interests?
Time of year will make a difference. Can be very wet up north

Queensland is almost as big as Mexico. Can you narrow it down a bit. Also as Mwenenzi said, it would be helpful to know the time of year, and what type of activities you are interested in (hiking, swimming, cities, etc).

Home base is near Toowoomba.
Next trip is in October for 3 weeks.
Never gone further than Noosa Heads, Chinchilla, Harvey Bay, Byron Bay. Ages ago I even worked on/for Tangalooma Island.
Would be nice to find Fossils, Emeralds and maybe even Opals and Gold.

Qld is larger than any EU country, actually - if you don't count Greenland's area as part of Denmark.

I see there's a nice new airport at Toowoomba, with direct flights to Sydney & Melbourne:

Greenland is specifically not in the EU, having left in 1985.

Yes, there is a new airport. Fares are just not comparable to those leaving from BNE, are quite pricey.
And it’s not even close to Toowoomba...
