Flying yyz-nrt in early March. Routing is either yyz-msp-nrt or yyz-dtw-nrt. With weather delays a consideration, which would be the better routing?

Honestly I don't think it matters very much, snow removal is a sport in both states. Plus, March is unlikely to encounter winter storms (especially in Detroit).

But DTW is the better airport, and as I recall you'll earn a few more miles by connecting in DTW rather than MSP.

i flew the reverse of this route last march (NRT-YYZ via DTW) and yes, it was snowing hard (the worst snow fall of the year during that time in YYZ). before we left detroit going to YYZ, there was a few minutes activity where they parked the plane somewhere and poured something for the snow.

I'm doing the same flight in March and decided to connect in DTW. I find that if there are any delays, it's faster to get from one gate to the other in DTW and I prefer it generally as an airport over MSP. That said, they're both great and do a good job in snowy situations.

Sorry a bit OT ...
DTW-NRT and MSP-NRT is on a B744. Unless you're flying J, Y is a nightmare.
Try to connect via SEA and take the A330 SEA-NRT instead.

Go for DTW. There are two DTW-NRT flights per day compared to one MSP-NRT flight per day.
You don't like flying AC, eh?

Flying AC
My flight to NRT will be on a US military fare, for which AC doesn't qualify. I'm looking at NW and AA, and would prefer AA, but I won't know which airline, as SATO (Navy travel agent of choice) is booking it for me. I will present them preferred routings however.
