Follow-up: was upgraded on the plane. There was an open seat in FC and the GA came on-board and said to the FA "We have a platinum in the back and we're going to move him up." I was lucky that it was me. Strangely, though, the guy next to me was gold (per his BP) and his colleague in front of him was Silver (per their conversation). I'm still not convinced that the process worked correctly, as these guys were UG at the window (there were no UG given at the gate - in fact, the other GA told me that FC was booked full and didn't even look at my BP. NWA.com confirmed that FC was booked full).

Crazy...but at least I got to sit up front for 36 minutes.

It is possible that the gold and silver were on full fare tickets. Or that they were paid F, or that they had upgraded with miles.

Actually, they were discussing upgrades after I got moved. From the sounds of it, they were upgraded per the EUA at their window. While it is true that they may have been on a full Y fare, I would think that would have happened at time of booking instead of at the upgrade window.

Based on another thread I read here about NW's system "not knowing" that regional jets have FC, I am suspicious that all is running correctly in upgrade-land. Certainly that's only my opinion, and I don't have extensive knowledge of the inner workings of NWA's computer system, but it seems that there are inconsistencies in the process.

Sure, it's possible.

Personally ... as long as I get to sit up front, I don't really much care when the upgrade is granted, as long as it's before wheels-up.

Phil, in one word... YES!
I am usually UG'd for my SEA-MSP red eye segment for Saturday morning by this time. No EUA UG so far. I checked R class availability on the NW website, predictably - there is none. Looking at the seat maps, there is at least EIGHT open seats in FC (there could actually be as many as TWELVE, if the bulk heads aren't really occupied).

I guess the bean counters at NW are banking on the fact that more people may be willing to buy their way into FC in order to get their THREE FREE checked bags (just a guess)!

NW 154 13/9 P6 F6 Y3 B0 M0 H0 Q0 V0 L0 T0 K0. Looks like a full flight. Not surprised to see them hold upgrades for now.

Alan,

Can you remind me of where to do this? I usually look at seatcounter, but they don't show "R". I think I remember you posting this link before, but I don't remember where...

Thanks!

Yes, and I've definitely been EUA'd well in advance on CR9's. I agree that it's unlikely, but given that the OP is a CO elite, maybe there's a bug there. Again, unlikely, but possible.

I had to use a couple of VDB's before they expired, so I booked myself and my wife into a little jaunt to Florida. BUF-DTW-MCO. Got the cheapest K fares I could find.

Was UG'ed on the out bound leg at 6 days out, and the returns at about 5 days. In fact, I only got an email about the DTW-BUF leg, but when I checked my res, we were in F on the MCO leg as well.

At no time did I have to call or complain or anything -- all automatic and smooth, and there we are.

So, it's working fine for me.

Angry No More 2nd Red Eye => SEA-MSP

Good point... thank you. I also forgot - NW has discontinued their summer time 2nd red eye flight that they ran during the summer time. Kind of stupid that the planners can't see the sense in keeping the 2nd red eye on the schedule permanently. Also doesn't help that the only way to get a RT discount ticket under $300 on the SEA-MSP route is to book on the red eye and then the 9:30 p.m. return flight from MSP.
