Standing by a bit early?
Using the standby option online the earlier flight has to be within 6 hours of the original flight, according to the regs. I'm assuming online and at kiosks any standby request longer than 6 hours would get rejected (or no?).
But what about going through security with the later boarding pass, and then showing up at the counter asking for standby on a flight leaving 9 hours before the scheduled departure. Would the gate agent likely just go ahead with it (and the res system not somehow go into paroxysms)?

Unless the rules have changed recently you should be able to do it. I was once booked on a red-eye flight but instead went standby on the first flight of the day (>12 hours) and was able to get on.

I've also done standbys about 12 hours early when I booked an evening flight and then something changed allowing me to go in the morning, as long as its the same day then its ok.
