stupid question

boss asked me about a question about WP, i wasn't sure of the answer so i thought i would post.

here it is-- if you book your flight BEFORE you gain status, will you have the ability to pick premium seats online when you finally get status. He had heard that you don't. I think that you should, but wasn't sure. I know that if you book premium seats before you lose status, you don't get kicked out of them.

It's worth trying ! May take a phone call and you have nothing to lose but some time.

Once you gain status, or you reach a new threshold, call the appropriate elite line, have them delete the WP number and then put it in again. The new status is now associated with the PNR.

Or do the same under your trips on the NW website.

The answer to your first question is affirmative.

I got silver after my outbound PHX-VIE last year, then I was immediately able to choose premium seats for the VIE-PHX inbound flights. No need to delete and reenter WP#.

Not sure about your second question.

As mentioned by previous posters, you can call the Worldperks line and tell them that your status has been upgraded. They will put the new status on your reservation, and then you will have access to the premium seats (if you are going from no status to silver).

Last year I tried to do it myself (delete my WP number and add it back in) and it didn't work. I had to call the Worldperks line. They may have fixed the system, though.

I think it even says something about this in the email you get when your status gets upgraded, and on the temporary card you can print out on the web site - specifically:

Your WorldPerks Elite status will be included for all reservations made after the effective date of your WorldPerks Elite status. Reservations that were made prior to reaching WorldPerks Elite status must be changed by calling the WorldPerks Customer Service Center at 1-800-44-PERKS (1-800-447-3757).

I agree. The system should associate the WP# to the newly upgraded status. Calling or going online should open up new seats. If he is traveling soon then he should have something like a WP card, boarding pass indicating new status, etc. to take advantage of elite boarding.
