So what do contemporary systems use?

I know KLM's 744s have the phone-on-the-wall in Y; their 777s have the phone/controller with email and sms and I think NW's 330s have something similar if not identical.

Are those systems radio-based or satellite-based? I tried searching but couldn't find what brand they are, or I'd have looked at the manufacturer site.

The inflight phone on long haul aircraft are satellite based. The inflight Wifi SK/LH/SQ were offering for a while with Boeing were satellite based.
