Lay over flights

If im suppose to fly out of an airport and have an lay over at another airport closer to me, is it possible for me to just fly out of the airport nearby airport that i have a lay over in?

On the return trip you can get off the plane and not get onto your last segment though. Since you are in Kalamazoo, I assume that you are flying through DTW. You have to start your flight in XXX-DTW-YYY, but on the return you can go YYY-DTW and get off the plane.

But if you have checked luggage, your checked luggage will go to your final destination, even if you don't fly that segment. 100% positive bag match does not happen on connecting flights.
