Not taking last flight/problems?

Another elementary question, I'm afraid.

What is the latest thought on this issue?

Specifically:

DTW-SFO-DTW, no Sat nite, in January, prices out around $1000.

DTW-MEM-ATL-MSP-SFO-DTW-EWR prices at $401. What risk if I just exit the plane in DTW on the return, and not take the last segment?
I could if necessary buy a one-way EWR-DTW from DL for $194, but want to avoid the time and the expense.

As long as you don't make a habit of it and you don't have any checked luggage, I think you could totally get away with it.

Exactly.

If you want to keep things legal, LGA-DTW one-ways are only about $115, last time I checked. Hang out in the city with your friends for the day and then hop onto the 6pm back to Detroit.

You are taking the risk that you don't get to connect in DTW on the return, and are instead sent via MSP or MEM or straight to EWR on CO. It's a small risk, but if it happens, you are really screwed, stuck with a walk-up ticket back to Detroit.

If I were you I would pay the $100 or so to fly the whole NW trip plus NYC-DTW. It's still a lot less than $1000 total.

Thanks.

I've confirmed that one-way LGA-DTW is $115, no advance purchase, several flights per day.

How does one get from EWR to LGA? How long does it take?
