trying for silver
I have 5000 miles to go for silver status. Can I only get Elite qualifying miles by flying, or can I get a World Perks card and be done with it (bonus points)?

NW's EQM can only be earned by plopping your butt onto one of their comfortable seats -- maybe a DC-9 with 30" pitch

Thanks for the good ideas! One more question:
Do I have to complete travel by 12/31, or does it have to post to my WorldPerks acct by 12/31 to qualify for 2004 silver status?

That's easy: complete travels by end of the year. Good luck!

One more question: Does the booking class matter for Elite Qualifying Miles? I see restrictions for Segments, but not Miles.

Welcome NW Newbie. You need to fly 5000 miles. An exception would be a paid 1class ticket which counts 150% as EQM. Thus, 3400 actual miles in paid 1class counts as 5100 EQM.

Segments are earned on certain fare classes-the more expensive ones namely, which you obviously don't need. Just be glad you're with NW, and not CO or DL.
(50% mileage on cheap fares for them)
And welcome to FT!
Edited for clarity.

Just made silver about a month ago, and so far it's been worth it. Since then, I've only taken one trip on NW, so this is hardly scientific, but I've been upgraded on 2 of 3 segments (DTW-LGA on a Friday night and MSP-DTW on a Sunday night). The 1 segment I didn't get upgraded on was LGA-MSP, but I had a 757 bulkhead window and a $300 TCV in my hand for voluntarily getting bumped from the oversold LGA-DTW flight (that I had paid $141 for). So far, so good...
