Upgrade with refundable fare question

I booked 2 tickets on the NWA website and asked for the fully refundable options. The fares came back as "B" fares and the rules stated they were fully refundable. I then called WorldPerks to upgrade them with miles and was told that I needed 10K each way (rather than 5K each way) to upgrade because the fare was fully refundable but not a "full fare". I checked every website box choice I could to make it a full fare.

Full fare and fully refundable are two different terms. A fare does not necessarily have to be Y (full fare coach) class to be fully refundable. Only Y class will let you upgrade for 5,000 miles.

I did everything online that I could to get a full fare ticket. Does this mean that you have to call and specifically ask for the Y fare? Thanks for your answer!

Unfortunately, I've found the online booking engine to leave out a lot of important features and logical routings. I'd advise you to call and ask for a Y fare.

Yes, this is one limitation of the nwa.com booking engine. As has been said, a refundable fare and a full fare can be different. It may behoove you to keep the fare you have and spend the extra miles as the full Y fare might be 2-4X as much. What cities are you flying between?
