Customs

In a few days I will be going to HKG on NW and I was wondering if anyone had problems with customs about electronics coming back into the US or even going to HKG. I will have a laptop and a camera.

If these are items that you owned previously, then no problem, don't declare them. If you aquired them on the trip and are bringing them for the first time home, then declare them. That is the safe answer.

if they are really expensive equipment
go to us customs before you leave and declare them with the receipt showing that they were purchased in the us
this way you have proof that they werent purchased overseas

The form you will need to prepare is called a "Certificate Of Registration". On the form you will show a description of the article and serial number. The customs inspector will need to see your receipt and the article to verify the serial number.

It's a very quick process, it only took me about 5 minutes to get this done at a customs office near ORD.

Not sure if things have changed recently, but in a handful of overseas trips incld Hng Kong, they never bothered me. Like most corporate citizens, I do not have a receipt for the laptop, and getting one would be a major hassle.

Again, never been bothered, but....

My last laptop travelled with me over 750,000 miles around the world. It entered and left the US at least 140 times, HKG at least 15 times and passed at least 400 European borders (not to mention a whole bunch of other places). It is not 1990 anymore, laptops, cell phones and cameras are common place and customs does not care (unless they are brand new in the box, and they still probably do not care).
