The 747
Just thought I'd be uncharacteristically flippant
and make my 747th post here, the forum of my favorite airline...which probably operates (so how many does UA still have?) the largest fleet 747s of any US carrier.
So here it is--three cheers for NW and the 747!

NW operates 47 B747 (including 16 B744, 18 B742 and 13 B742F) and UA operates 25 B747 (all B744 many others are stored). Look for NWs B742 fleet to begin shrinking very soon

Aw, shucks, RKG, thanks
IP--thanks for the detailed info. I was looking for it the other day but couldn't find any current fleet details--where did you find it? I need to think of something interesting for my 757th post

NWA's Fleet
It looks like they've retired a B747F... so NW's now operating only 46 B747. (Then again NW's website isn't always accurate... they listed 20 B742 in operation until the recent update, but they've only been operating 18 for awhile...)

Best way to get a fleet count is in the monthly World Traveler magazine as it is updated every month

No it doesn't. I saw the new NRT map in this month's World Traveller. It's the same map you'll find if you go to the website.

She's a much better cover than the "Dr. Evil" lookalike...

Ah yes, I know the picture you are referring to. It's been in World Traveller for a long time. Changing text on a page is an easy change to make. Changing the picture would require hiring a photographer and making sure the proper aircraft are in position. That effort seems hardly worthwhile.

Just arrived in BKK aboard the usual -400, after a speedy flight from SFO to NRT (-200). I just love these 747's. We left SFO 50 minutes late but arrived at NRT 60 minutes early! The pilot must have put the pedal to the metal!
I will miss these planes once they are all gone. I hope it is not for some time yet.
Edited to add: My return flight was changed to a DC10! I really dislike this plane. I have changed my return by one day to get back on a 747-200. I have to go to Seattle instead of SFO, but it is worth it!
