Looks like this is now in effect at MSP.
New security screening process in Minneapolis/St. Paul
In cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration, gate screening of passengers has been eliminated at Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. Passenger identification checks and screening will now be done at the security checkpoints. As a result, a boarding pass is now required to get through security checkpoints; an E-Ticket receipt or itinerary is no longer adequate.

Flew out of MSP on Monday (12/9/02) and no more random checks / inconvience / entertainment at the gate simiar to DTW. Had some good entertainment last week when selected for the random inconvienced traverl award as one of the first to board, only to watch pretty much everyone else go right on by. Im glad I did my part to ease the boarding process, and let everyone else on while I was "checked out". Ah, the joys of being 130K on the red tail

Actually, the gate checks at DTW have been gone for about a month now. I flew on 11/15, and they checked ID's at security and announced at the gate that there would be no ID check there. Much better, because now when I have an upgrade I don't have to hold back on boarding and let someone else take the gate search.
Also, I will second the endorsement of online check-in to save time. It only takes a couple of minutes, lets you change your seat assignment if there are open seats, and in DTW you can use the baggage check in the parking garage if you have checked baggage.
