It may not be cheap to get KL awards but they do allow one way upgrades on all fares. So you can u/grade froma cheap fare for the night portion of a transatlantic and fly abck in Y in coach. This seems to be a good feature.

Is it possible to combine an existing NW account (small balance < 11k) with an existing KL account?
