Operational Upgrade

Excuse what might be a much asked question.
What constitutes an International OU and under what circumstances might one be granted?

If economy class is overbooked at boarding time and if there are business class seats available, then some lucky economy class passengers are moved up to business class for free.

If there are still some passengers who don't have a seat because both cabins are full, then denied boarding compensation auction begins.

Also, in the rare event that this happens, the airline usually upgrades (as expected) those passengers with status first.
