Is this a back to back ticketing?
Can anyone tell me if these are allowed by Northwest?
First ticket Madison-Seattle roundtrip
Jan 3 MSN-DTW-SEA
Jan 15 SEA-DTW-MSN
Second ticket Seattle-Tokyo roundtrip
Jan 3 SEA-DTW (red eyes)
Jan 4 DTW-NRT
Jan 15 SEA-DTW (red eyes)
Jan 16 DTW-MSN
First ticket Madison-Seattle roundtrip
Jan 3 MSN-DTW-SEA
Jan 15 SEA-DTW-MSN

I don't think you will have any trouble. I think a back to back ticket is if you bought a 2nd Seattle/Madison ticket so that you would be making 2 trips without staying over a Saturday night.

Are you throwing away the Jan.15 SEA-DTW-MSN part of the first ticket? That's the part that might cause problems.

No, it is not back-to-back. It is end-on-end, which is usually allowed by the fare rules.
Don't worry about flying back to DTW in the middle of the first roundtrip. Your trip is really MSN to SEA to NRT; NRT back to SEA back to MSN, an end-on-end. Connection cities are irrelevant unless you drop segments to turn a connection city into a destination (hidden city ticketing).

Thanks you for the reply. I was afraid that I would fly from DTW to SEA and back in the same day by 2 tickets. DTW is not my destination and I plan to skip no segment. I hope I will have no problem.
