Quick summary:
CO: upgrading is a pain in the butt - even for a Platinum. We often had to wait until 10 minutes before DEPARTURE to get our seat. But the food's better than NW. Also, CO agents are much more rigid about going on same-day standby; NW doesn't care whether you might use a different hub than is listed on your ticket, but CO was a big pain with this aspect as well. USING your miles on CO is also challenging.
NW: Try to connect in MEM - more pleasant people and smaller airport. On a breakfast flight, well, avoid breakfast flights or bring your own. It's a little hard to tell whether you'll end up with one of their infamous horrible bagels or a decent eggy/sausagey plate with a little fruit. And the ice cream dessert on later meals is no longer Haagen-Dazs.

Be sure that you check the NW site often, and when you register for any promotion on line be sure to print out the "Thanks for registering" sheet. They have had some real problems in the past with dropped entries. Being from MEM, the hub here is really good, many times the personnel will go the extra mile to keep you happy. I have gotten some nice coupons for miles by just asking if there are delays or problems with my flight.
