I don't know.
I would note that in each instance the upgrade was made about 5 hours before the flight. Presumably the elites would have been upgraded before me. Also, I don't know if its available on all flights or just the ones that I took (Tuesday late afternoon from DCA and Friday earlier afternoon from MSP).

They may still have that program in place where one pays $25 or $50 per 500 mile increments to upgrade to first class domestically.
I haven't seen this promoted in a long time though (is this the "E-First" program?) so I'm not sure if it's still in place.
BTW, a slightly off-topic, anyone see the short film "The Upgrade"? Hillarious. Here's a link to it:

DJMeatball, thanks for the link. I'd tried to watch this before once, but couldn't get a connection to that site that night.
I will chide you for posting off topic, just so people don't think I support that type of thing.

I posted this in the Continental forum, but it's of interest here too:
I booked a NW ticket from TUS to EWR for the CMDIII. The flights are all CO operated codeshares. I liked the NW $198 fare a lot better then the lowest available CO fare, $358, for the same flights!
On the 18th I got the Platinum EUA e-mails for my trip on the 23rd, including the often difficult IAH-EWR segment, this morning I got the upgrade for Tuesday's flight from EWR to IAH on the 777

NW mentions its E-first promotion on its website, so its still in place. In this instance, I had a paper ticket. So I called ahead (5 or 6 hours before the flight) to NW reservations and just said I wanted to upgrade and that I knew an upgrade is normally available with an e-ticket, but could I upgrade anyway. The CSAs said that I could for $50 dollars rather than the $35 dollars they charge for the E-first upgrade (and yes it is based on miles in the segment).
