Using a $100 voucher

I got this $100 voucher for a canceled NWA flight.

I live in Seattle and, since I enjoy flying very much, I'd like to use it to buy a roundtrip to anywhere for around $100. I thought neighbouring cities would be a good bet, but no chance. SEA to PDX is in $700s (no direct connection on NWA) and other places are even more expensive. What the heck?

Weird question, but how do I find the cheapest NWA fare to anywhere from SEA

Thanks!

Looks good but I was hoping to have more choice Any chance on using the voucher on partner airlines? (Alaska would be great)

Thank you.

Take a look at this site:

http://beta.farecompare.com/search/f...by=Destination

It lists the lowest fares, but you will have to check if the fare is available for the day you want.

If it's an ECV you may be able to use it for NW-coded AS metal codeshare flights. I'm not sure if you'll find any for $100, though.

The voucher can also be used for CO flights IIRC.

Nope. I just called Continental and the answer was a clear NO

If it's an ECV, CO most definitely won't accept it, but you can use it for NW flights on CO metal:

"Travel is permitted NW and KL designated flights that are operated by NW, Mesaba, Pinnacle, KLM, KLM TCV, Continental, and Continental Express."

View complete T&Cs here:

http://www.nwa.com/travel/viewecv/ecvtandc.html

TCVs have slightly different terms.

There was a similar question recently involving a voucher of a larger denomination and I will offer similar advice now: choose your destination by VALUE and not price. Trying to hit something for $100 is a tall order and in the end, isn't it just a pointless little numbers exercise? Think: would you fly to Boise for $0 on your $100 voucher instead of flying to Boston for $150 plus your voucher because you happen to have a $100 voucher? Maybe, but I sure wouldn't. Instead, find a destination that you actually want to go to, get your very best fare and enjoy the fact that the first $100 is on Northwest. Personally, I would be looking for a lowball fare on a longer haul to an attractive destination in an effort to maximize miles and net that against what is being paid for the ticket. If you don't participate in Northwest's WorldPerks program and you can't accumulate worthwhile mileage on a partner, then that certainly changes things.

Great advice, actually this is also my plan. I was looking for Providence in September (using the Dream Map suggested earlier) but the calendar doesn't work for me.

But I have time, there's still 10 months left for that ECV.

Thanks!

For the code share flights, I assume they should show up on nwa.com just like a NWA regular flight. Is that correct?

Thanks!

With a few exceptions (such as intra-west-coast AS codeshares, for which your ECV isn't valid anyway), codeshares will generally only show up on nwa.com if they are part of an itinerary that includes at least one NW metal flight. There are some all-CO metal NW codeshare itins out there, but you'll have to find them elsewhere and call NW to book them, as I highly doubt they'll show up on nwa.com. Also, you're probably not going to be able to book CO metal nonstops as NW codeshares (only connecting flights).

CO probably can't take ECVs, but they do accept NW TCVs for CO-coded flights - it's a little-known fact (even by many CO res. agents) that CO and NW TCVs and MCOs can be used to purchase tickets through either airlines -- codeshared or not.
