How many elites are there?

I was wondering if anyone has a clue as to what percent of NW WorlPerks Members are actually Silver/Gold/Platinum elites? Personally, I think it is probably the top 10%/5%/2%. What do you guys think?

This question gets asked periodically for just about every airline, and other than speculation and guessing, there's no clear answer. That information is proprietary to the airlines.

At one point, someone posted that there were a couple hundred thousand elites, but I suspect nobody unaffiliated with Worldperks really knows.

Some of the estimates I've heard are that 1-2% of the WorldPerks members are Platinum elite, with something like 5-6% of overall WorldPerks members being elite.

I *really* wish that someone in the IT staff visited this site, and would offer some "tidbits" about things like this. I'm sure there's some things that can be shared, that aren't... completely... proprietary.

I found an article where Randy Petersen estimated more than 4 million elite-level frequent fliers in the US.

I think it's safe to assume that NW would have at least 10% of that total (since SW, one of the largest domestic carriers, doesn't have an elite program), that would give NW at least 400,000 elite flyers.

They must all live in ORD or DTW. Last 3:30pm ORD-DTW flight I took on standby had 16 (F) and 42 on standby for F. Yesterday's 6:05 ORD-DTW had 16 (F) and 21 on standby for F. It's not the number that I'd find interesting... it's the distribution by city, route, and time (on each flight).

Usually one more than you would like when you are trying to get an upgrade at the gate and you are number 5 in line for 4 seats

The CO Stats

A few execs spilled the beans on their elite pool at the last two DO's.

IIRC these are the stats:
  • Silver Elite: ~200,000
  • Gold Elite: ~45,000
  • Plat Elite: ~25,000
  • Infi. Plats: ~2,500
I do not know the stats for NW, but these are the numbers heard (+/- a few thousand) straight from management.

(edited to add)
  • Total People Enrolled in OP: 20,000,000+
  • Total Active Members: 2,000,000

Too many!

Seriously, take a look at this quote from another thread posted recently:

"I was a silver the past four years, this year PE due to double EQM promotion last year, went from silver to Platinum in one round trip flight msp-bkk. IMHO with the number of NW passengers qualifying this year, I think it will be difficult even on the Golds."
Is elite inflation a reality due to the Double EQM Promo last year?!

I think so. It may get a little better March 1, but with FT only a small cross-section of the general WP membership I think there are a few more folks like this guy that took advantage of the double promo. Perhaps not to the point of jumping two levels, but at least one.

Since I'm Gold and only took one short trip during the promo month, there may have been quite a few elites that took a bunch and cashed in (to PE).

My UG percentage has suffered ever since.
