Mechanics strike at Northwest Airlines
August 20, 2005 01:11 AM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mechanics and other ground workers struck Northwest Airlines early on Saturday after last-ditch negotiations failed to reach a deal on concessions to help the carrier cut costs and avert possible bankruptcy.
The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association represents 5,400 mechanics, cleaners and custodians at the No. 4 U.S. airline, which said it would use replacement workers to maintain its planes and keep flying.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - After months of failed negotiations, union mechanics for Northwest Airlines have decided to walk off the job.
Union spokesman Jim Young says the mechanics would rather see the airline go into bankruptcy than agree to Northwest's terms.
The union, which represents about 4,400 hundred of Northwest's 40,000 workers, decided to strike around eleven tonight (central daylight time).
The airline -- which says it is losing four (m) million dollars a day -- had asked the mechanics for a 25-percent pay cut and for the right to lay off two-thousand positions so that the work could be outsourced. In 2000, Northwest had already slashed their ranks by nearly half.
A huge question for both sides is whether other Northwest unions will cross a mechanics picket line.
By Friday afternoon, the two sides had gone all day without a joint session, said Jim Young, a union negotiator at the site of talks in Washington, D.C. He declined to comment further on the talks.
Northwest, which says it is losing about $4 million a day, wants its mechanics, cleaners and custodians to take a 25 percent pay cut. It also wants the right to lay off another 2,000 so it can send more of their work to outside vendors. Northwest has already slashed their ranks from 8,390 in 2002 to 4,427 now.
Northwest has said it needs $176 million worth of savings from mechanics as part of $1.1 billion in annual savings from all its employees. It said it made its "last, best" offer on Thursday night, though it wouldn't give details. The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association said the offer wasn't good enough.
"I'm absolutely convinced that the proposal that they made last night moved inches, where yards need to be advanced," said AMFA Assistant National Director Steve MacFarlane on Friday.
Northwest, the nation's fourth-largest airline, and its regional carriers operate more than 1,500 flights to 750 cities. It has hubs in Detroit, Minneapolis, Memphis, Tokyo, and Amsterdam. It employs about 40,000 people, including 4,427 in the mechanic's union.
Mechanics union leaders have predicted that a strike will seriously disrupt the airline.
A huge question for both sides was whether other Northwest unions would cross a mechanics picket line. Only the flight attendants appeared to be seriously considering a sympathy strike - and Northwest said it had replacement workers for some of them, too. A flight attendant vote on whether to strike was scheduled to end one minute before the mechanic strike deadline.
Ground workers and pilots didn't say whether they would honor a picket line, but they had been considered unlikely to. They said they would announce their position after a mechanic's strike begins.
On Friday afternoon, a federal judge barred mechanics at Northwest regional carrier Mesaba Airlines from staging a sympathy strike. Those mechanics are represented by the same AMFA locals that represent Northwest mechanics at hubs in Minneapolis, Detroit and Memphis.
"The effects of a disruption in Mesaba's operations would be felt in thirty-three states and three Canadian provinces," Judge David S. Doty wrote. "Twenty-one cities and towns where Mesaba is the lone scheduled airline stand to lose all commercial air service. Thus the public interest favors issuance of the order."
On Thursday, the union local that represents 2,700 Northwest ground workers in Detroit said it would not honor a mechanic picket line.

Mechanics strike Northwest Airlines

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Mechanics went on strike against Northwest Airlines early Saturday after refusing big pay cuts and layoffs that would have cut their numbers almost in half. The nation's fourth largest airline pledged to keep flying with replacements.
After months of talks broke off here just before midnight Friday, union spokesman Jim Young said the mechanics would rather see the airline go into bankruptcy than agree to Northwest's terms. Northwest mechanics go on strike
August 20, 2005 NWA0820
Mechanics at Northwest Airlines walked off the job Friday night, risking the permanent loss of their jobs and throwing the financial future of Northwest into doubt.
The strike is a stark demonstration of how committed Northwest CEO Doug Steenland is to getting $1.1 billion in annual labor savings from Northwest employees, but his willingness to endure a strike also comes with risks for the airline and its customers.
The strike means 4,400 Northwest workers, including about 3,100 in the Twin Cities, are out of a job. Jim Young, chairman of the negotiating committee of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA), said his union members were forced into the strike by inferior offers made by company negotiators.
AMFA members "would rather see the carrier go into bankruptcy than give in to the terms that Northwest Airlines has been asking," Young said.

Al and Bernadette Whipkey held hands, fingers laced, when they got official word shortly after 11 p.m. Friday: They're on strike.
At the last minute, the couple -- a Northwest mechanic and an engine parts cleaner -- decided they wanted to be among friends at the strike center when they learned whether their next Northwest shift would be a work line or a picket line.
It was a climactic end to a tense few weeks, as about 4,400 members of Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association stared down the Friday strike deadline.
Mechanic Lenny Alves said he felt the same tightness in his chest that comes just before he steps on a roller coaster.

For occasional travelers, strike hardly means 'business as usual'
Star Tribune
August 20, 2005 TRAVEL0820
Louisiana Judge Sol Gothard and his wife, Jacqueline, were spitting mad. They had $110 worth of buffalo meat from Montana packed in a cooler stowed in the cargo of a Northwest jet, and pets that had nobody to take care of them back home in Louisiana.
But like some passengers at the airport Friday evening, their flight was delayed. Passengers had been told that planes were being delayed or canceled for mechanical or maintenance reasons.
Northwest Airlines, which has promised "business as usual" if the 4,400 members of its mechanics union strike, declined to comment on the state of operations at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport in the hours leading up to the 11:01 p.m. strike deadline Friday.
Sol Gothard, an appeals judge in Louisiana's state courts, didn't know anything about a strike looming until their flight was canceled 10 minutes before boarding.
"They should have made arrangements in advance then, if they knew," he said of Northwest management. "They had an obligation to tell us months ago that the return flight might be in jeopardy. If I knew that, we would have taken a different flight."

Northwest Airlines will Continue to Operate Normal Schedule
(nwa.com labor updates)
EAGAN, Minn. - (August 19, 2005; 11:00 p.m. CDT) -- Northwest Airlines (NASDAQ: NWAC) today said that it plans to operate its normal schedule despite the failure to reach a consensual agreement with the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA).
"Northwest customers can continue to depend on Northwest for their travel needs. We intend to operate our normal schedule of domestic and international flights," said Doug Steenland, president and chief executive officer.
"During the past 18 months, Northwest developed a comprehensive contingency plan that includes expanded vendor relationships to ensure that the airline continues to operate normally. Northwest has experienced, licensed and trained mechanics in place to service all NWA aircraft. The airline remains in full compliance with all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations."
"The Northwest final offer was fair to our employees while recognizing the need for equitable labor costs savings from all labor groups so that Northwest could restructure successfully," Steenland continued.
Because of the failure to reach an agreement with AMFA leadership prior to the midnight (EDT), August 20 deadline, Northwest has implemented new terms and conditions for its mechanics as permitted by the federal Railway Labor Act.

UPDATE: Northwest Air Mechanics Go On Strike
08-20-05 01:46 AM EST
(Updates by adding ground workers to workers not joining strike; adds spokesman for flight attendants union saying some attendants may honor picket lines; adds details and background)
WASHINGTON (AP)--Mechanics went on strike against Northwest Airlines early Saturday after refusing big pay cuts and layoffs that would have cut their numbers almost in half. The nation's fourth-largest airline pledged to keep flying with replacements.
After months of talks broke off in Washington just before midnight Friday, union spokesman Jim Young said the mechanics would rather see the airline go into bankruptcy than agree to Northwest's terms. The Airline Mechanics Fraternal Association represents about 11% of Northwest's 40,000 workers. The strike began at 12:01 a.m. EDT.
Flight attendants, ground workers and pilots at Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest said they would not join the walkout by mechanics.
