Yeah, my 500 M number was a crazy guess. So now I did some real research. NWA lost $505M (I'm looking at the negative operating income) over all of 2004.

They lost $292M in 2005 Q1 alone.

Based on the market cap, you can buy all of NWA for less than the price of 4 747-400's (at the list price of $100M each).

Q3 is where they have a slight chance to show better performance (higher summer fares, even more packed planes, etc.). I'll stick with my 500M Q2 estimate for now. Their stock is sinking fast. It's hard to believe even renegotiated contracts can keep them out of Chapter 11.

I really believe that NW would not hesitate to massage the books to show a very high loss for Q2 in order to pressure the unions into further concessions. I think the unions are starting to bend and NW will help them bend more.

So ~$500M is possible but not really a reflection of the quarter.

my guess

I am going to say $328m ---ugh the rats are jumping

pointsforthepeople Jul 1, 2005 6:16 pm

182million in the red :(

Over on my 'home' board, the AC forum, there are airline lurkers that stop by FT every so often. Are there NW or WP staffers that do the same thing, that we know of, with the NW FT forum? If yes, wonder if the direction this thread headed is surprising.

Just a thought.

A loss of $186 million with a warning that the company will face massive losses after Labor Day and a possible bankruptcy filing if costs (labor, fuel, and other) don't come down by the end of the year.

There are most definitely NW executive lurkers around here. Who do you think predicted the $500 mil loss? :D

Sure you can... but you'd also have to assume the billions and billions and debt owed.

My estimate seems to arond the concensus of a $200-300 loss, but for my shot at the Starbucks cert :D .... I'll go with a loss of $258.
