2nd Qrt ends: any bets? tic tic tic tic

Well, no pillows, much higher fares, no nuts, higher fees, pretty scary. within the next three weeks nwac reports 2nd qrt earnings. My prediction is a loss of 324 million dollars. any other guesses?

channa Jun 30, 2005 9:25 pm

Probably $100 mil. loss.

CO and AA will be profitable. NW and DL will post a loss. UA may lose too. And with all the US-HP stuff, we won't be able to decipher US's numbers. :D

nydonwvu Jun 30, 2005 9:34 pm

I am looking in the neighborhood of 290mm loss.

I really want to see the cash flow, Balance sheet and income statment though.

MikeMpls Jun 30, 2005 9:37 pm

This is summer, high season, high loads, only a paltry $125-150M loss.

What's the prize?

kb1992 Jun 30, 2005 10:01 pm

I'll take the average of above 4 responses: $220 million. :D :D

fromYXU Jun 30, 2005 10:28 pm

I will be a bit generous and say $150M.

For May, US was short $39M and UA short $93M.

Although I would not be surprised to see NW short something like ~$500M just to scare the unions a bit more. NW seems to like to drive the point home that unions have to agree to NW's terms.

sllevin Jun 30, 2005 11:23 pm

I believe it will be huge -- potentially in excess of 350 million in the red.

I'm betting on huge loss as well... though all of the guesses seem to fit that definition. The retention problems and stock sales have very strong implications, none of them good.

NOLAnwGOLD Jun 30, 2005 11:59 pm

hopefully good since i need to offload some stock!!

actually i'm thinking it's going to be pretty bad news, their costs are high, gas ain't cheap and well....just a sinking feeling....sooner or later though, the red tail will be fine....

DJMeatBall Jul 1, 2005 6:38 am

It sure looks to me like they should be declaring a profit -- their loads are incredibly high, they've been cutting or charging for anything that resembles a perk for both employee & customer.

At the same time oil is at a record high, the stock price is as low as ever (which makes borrowing/financing really difficult) and management (whoever they are now) is doing their best (or worst?) to push the company towards bankruptcy to sock it to the employee contracts and the pensions.

I'd say a loss of at least $500 million.

H2O_Goalie Jul 1, 2005 7:05 am

Honestly, I don't really want to think about it (Ostrich syndrome). Living here in MEM, the only way I can catch a direct flight anywhere other than a Delta/American/United hub is on Northwest.

My guess...a cool $225 million.

plat Jul 1, 2005 12:05 pm

400 million

DJMeatBall Jul 1, 2005 12:11 pm

rwill11 Jul 1, 2005 12:18 pm

Earnings report and conference call are on 20 july. Your 500 est is at my very high end. If it hits that number Im afraid chapt 11 will follow shortly. Fall is the slow season and wishing oil will go down is not an option. IF oil is at 70 bucks and they have to raise fares to cover it you will see consumers balk.

tcook052 Jul 1, 2005 12:36 pm

$222m loss, give or take a buck or two...

Yeah, my 500 M number was a crazy guess. So now I did some real research. NWA lost $505M (I'm looking at the negative operating income) over all of 2004.

They lost $292M in 2005 Q1 alone.

Based on the market cap, you can buy all of NWA for less than the price of 4 747-400's (at the list price of $100M each).

Q3 is where they have a slight chance to show better performance (higher summer fares, even more packed planes, etc.). I'll stick with my 500M Q2 estimate for now. Their stock is sinking fast. It's hard to believe even renegotiated contracts can keep them out of Chapter 11.

rwill11 Jul 1, 2005 12:49 pm

OK OK the prize

:D I know we are all FTers and want a prize so here'sthe deal. For the person that guesses closest to the actual results on this site (by july 15 2005) I will send them a 10 dollars gift certificate to starbucks ^ ^

I really believe that NW would not hesitate to massage the books to show a very high loss for Q2 in order to pressure the unions into further concessions. I think the unions are starting to bend and NW will help them bend more.

So ~$500M is possible but not really a reflection of the quarter.

DerikG Jul 1, 2005 5:31 pm

my guess

I am going to say $328m ---ugh the rats are jumping

pointsforthepeople Jul 1, 2005 6:16 pm

182million in the red :(

tcook052 Jul 1, 2005 6:55 pm

Over on my 'home' board, the AC forum, there are airline lurkers that stop by FT every so often. Are there NW or WP staffers that do the same thing, that we know of, with the NW FT forum? If yes, wonder if the direction this thread headed is surprising.

Just a thought.

HeathrowGuy Jul 1, 2005 8:20 pm

A loss of $186 million with a warning that the company will face massive losses after Labor Day and a possible bankruptcy filing if costs (labor, fuel, and other) don't come down by the end of the year.

There are most definitely NW executive lurkers around here. Who do you think predicted the $500 mil loss? :D

Are you implying that DJMeatBall works for NWA?

Sure you can... but you'd also have to assume the billions and billions and debt owed.

My estimate seems to arond the concensus of a $200-300 loss, but for my shot at the Starbucks cert :D .... I'll go with a loss of $258.

I might have, but I have since retired.

$196mil in the red.

Just for the Starbucks GC.

NWA Belly up

I hope NWA turns it around financially, however, the writing is on the wall. Bankruptcy is around the corner. However, I am really not that concerned about it. Should I be? If I were an employee I may, but as a PE I feel my miles are safe (I keep between 200k and 300k on hand) and with debt restructering perhaps some of the small perks will return. I'm an LAS to Asian pax with a few domestics sprinkled in and although I have questioned whether or not to stay with the red tail in the past, I think I'll stilck it out with them. NWA has treated me well. I'll fasten my seatbelt and see what happens. :)

trader475 Jul 2, 2005 6:39 am

A 2nd quarter loss of $267,500,000.

OnAMileHigh Jul 5, 2005 8:31 pm

Q2 Loss

My guess is for a Q2 loss of $323.5 Mill.

NWA_5479 Jul 5, 2005 9:20 pm

197,000,000 in the red for Q2.

BackOfTheBus Jul 5, 2005 9:39 pm

$287,500,000.00 loss

(that includes $13,245.00 in tid-bid revenue since sales began! )

ALARISstl Jul 5, 2005 10:02 pm

$229 Mil loss

OutOfOffice Jul 6, 2005 10:00 am

I bid $1. Remember, the contestent closest to the actual retail price without going over wins. :D

rwill11 Jul 6, 2005 10:05 am
