Automatic Upgrade--almost two months in advance!

This was unexpected, but welcome. I booked an LAX-AMS roundtrip a few weeks ago for mid-March. I booked in "B" and was able to upgrade the LAX-DTW portion of my return with miles, but no luck with DTW-LAX. I got the "Upgrade Status" e-mail today. I figured I'd end up in first on that flight eventually, but it's nice to have it confirmed so soon.

I'm confused. Is this a waitlisted mileage upgrade or just an EUA that happened early? If it's just a waitlisted mileage upgrade (your title seems to indicate EUA ran early) then there's nothing really big about a DTW-LAX getting an R seat two months before.

Well, I checked, if I book a B fare to CHINA for certain dates, I can get upgrade 11 months in advance using miles!

You are not very clear. Did you use miles to upgrade your entire roundtrip from LAX to AMS? If not, you wasted miles just for the domestic portion (which you will most likely be upgraded as a PE anyway.)

Sorry--typo in original post. I shouldn't type before my morning coffee.

I upgraded LAX-AMS and AMS-DTW with miles, but the final domestic segment was unavailable at the time. If I got put on an upgrade waitlist for the last leg, I truly appreciate it--but nobody told me! I did assume I'd be EUA'ed a few days before the flight, but wasn't expecting anything sooner.
