V class upgrade

V class upgrade
I have a V class ticket, but was told that I could not upgrade to businees on an internation flight, but I keep seeing on the forums that people do upgrade a V class ticket. What am I missing?

Tran-Atlantic: Y & B fares are upgradeable
Trans-Pacific: Y, B & M fares are upgradeable, unless it's China then just Y & B
You can pay the fare difference to get to a B fare and use miles from there.
