Direct flights and EAU

Has anyone else had problems getting their upgrades through EAU for both legs on direct flights when one of the legs doesn't clear. I know this has happened to me in the past, but have no recent experience. I am looking at MSP-DTW-PBI, which is listed as a direct flight. Since the MSP-DTW leg is at 6:00am on Monday, I am worried about not getting upgraded on that leg and then having the system not even try for the DTW-PBI leg.

I am a Plat, but know how busy those 6:00am Monday flights are.

These direct flights are pesky things when it comes down to the upgrading system. You have to be cleared for an upgrade for MSP-PBI, since the upgrades do not clear with each segment. In other words, if there's space available for upgrade on the DTW-PBI and not on the MSP-DTW segments, you don't get an upgrade. The best way to avoid this is to a.) book the segments separately when booking or avoid booking such flights at all or b.) on the day of departure, try standing by for a flight that is no considered a "direct" flight.
