Lightbulb SILVER SUMMER '04: How are YOUR upgrades doing?

I am curious to see how upgrades are doing for Silvers this busy summer season. I already requalified for Silver for next year, so perhaps I should go for the Gold if my fellow Silvers are not achieving good upgrade rates:

JUNE 2004:

NW Flights taken: 6

NW Flights upgraded: 5/6

NW Flights not upgraded: 1/6

NW Flights EUAed at Silver window: 1/6 (into R)

NW Flights upgraded at ONLINE-check-in: 4/6 (into F)

NW Flights upgraded at counter/gate: 0/6

NW Flights on off-peak days (TUE,WED, THU AM and SAT): 6/6

NW Flights on low Elite routes: 3/6

NW Flights on high Elite routes: 3/6

SPECIFIC FLIGHT INFO:

12JUN2004 SAT NW 0272 NW 0272 F/K SFO - MEM
No EUA; At online check-in (35h out), flight was showing P9F9 on Etour. About 5 non-Elites moved to FC because of coach oversell. Flight 100% FULL.

12JUN2004 SAT NW 0980 NW 0980 F/K MEM - TPA
No EUA; At online check-in (39h out), flight was showing P4F4 on Etour. An Elite upgraded his wife and 3 kids to FC at the gate. Flight 100% FULL.

05JUN2004 SAT NW 0845 NW 0845 F/K BOS - MSP
No EUA; Online check-in at 24h before flight, Etour data not known. Flight had 13/22 FC seats empty (even after non-rev upgrade), back was about 40% full.

05JUN2004 SAT NW 0587 NW 0587 F/K MSP - SFO
No EUA; Online check-in at 28h before flight, Etour data not known. Flight had a non-rev pilot and at least 1 other employee in FC. Flight 60% FULL.

02JUN2004 WED NW 0485 NW 0485 R/K TPA - DTW
This is the only EUA I got on the trip. Before flight departure, 2 non-revs were moved to FC. Flight 90% FULL.

02JUN2004 WED NW 0891 NW 0891 K/K DTW - BOS
No EUA, no upgrade. I was #7 on wait list, only #1 and #2 cleared. There was at least 1 PLAT and 1 GOLD on the wait list. At online check-in (36h out), flight was P1F0. Flight 85% FULL.

I do not have much of a sample size yet to help base any decisions on (i.e. whether to go for Gold), but so far for June I am 1 for 1 and so is Mrs. flymetokix -- both MDT-DTW. Not exactly trunk routes, but they usually do seem to pack F.

I am 8/9 for Silver upgrades.

Only one I missed was IAH-DTW-BOS. IAH-DTW had 30 people (!) on waitlist for FC and the flight was way oversold. No worries-took a bump for a direct flight on CO, FC seat, and NW even gave me my original miles since it was more than the direct.

Will re-qualify this year for Silver....no time to make gold.

In June, I am 3/5 in upgrades. Missed out on two CO IAH-MSY flights, but sat in 5A which might be better than FC because of leg room and storage space under the FC 4A seat. On the year, I am 21/25. Beside missing on the above two flights, I missed out earlier in the year on MSY-MSP 7am flights. Most of my flights are B fare.

I reach Gold the last flight of this month through EQS. My EQM are currently at 41,000.

Since Memorial Day weekend I have flown two trips on NW. All possible upgrades were successful, but my flights were at off-peak times. I even got FC on a SFO-DTW redeye.

For the summer, I am 5/6 - only "miss" being DTW-LAS. That's also my only "miss" for the year out of about 25+ segments.

I swear I must fly the wrong routes. So far this year as a platinum:

4/4 DTW-SEA
5/12 MSP-DCA
3/4 MSP-YVR
5/8 DCA-DTW
0/2 DTW-MSP
4/4 MSP-LAX
2/2 MSP-LAS

For a grand total of 23/36 = about 65%.

I've heard lots of people say MSP-LAS/LAX are tough upgrades, but every time I've flown them there have been plenty of silvers and non-revs in F.

I've said it before, but I think Sunday night MSP-DCA is THE hardest upgrade in the NW system possibly. Regularly 20+ platinums alone on the standby list. I haven't cleared on this flight in over a year.

8/8 upgraded, but 2 segments were not upgraded until the day before.

I am gold.

Well for the Summer, I am 4/4. Admittingly, I travelled off peak..a Saturday late afternoon ORD-DTW-RSW and a Monday afternoon RSW-DTW-ORD.

Overall I am 10/12. The other 8 flights, I was upgraded 6 times. All the flights were on trips to SEA in relative off peak times..Saturdays, Sundays, and Tuesdays.

I am Silver and loving it. Should easily requalify for Silver later this Summer(I hope) and then if the fall PD coupons have the cheapy zone fares to Europe, I will give a good shot at Gold. Thanks again to NWA for so many things!!

Now I may not have any strong stats to back me up on this, but strictly from experience, I would be willing to bet that the Monday morning MSP-MDW or MDW-MSP Friday night have just an equal amount of plats on standby. I always laugh when there is maybe only a dozen non elite on the plane.

Hmm, congressional folks headed back from SD,ND,MN,NE,WI,ID,MT,and WY? Makes some sense as congresscritters would largely be elites flying back and fourth so often. Maybe that new DEN-DCA nonstop on United will help some.

Yeah, plenty of congresscritters. Usually at least 2 or 3 on this flight. Add in all the lobbyists, lawyers, etc. DC is quite a transient city. I was once told that DCA has more platinums per Worldperks member than any other city. Not sure if it's true, but it wouldn't shock me.
