Changes to KEF

I just passed thru KEF airport and major changes are underway.

Just to back up a bit, before 2002 in KEF, there was just the gate area and the terminal area (with shops and such). In 2002, they added the Schengen area, which was a facility addition to the south end of the gate area, to comply with the Schengen Agreement.

Now, what was called the "terminal area" is now the "north area", and is being developed substantially. There is no disruption in services, but it is just that they are in a different place. Which can be a problem.

For most travelers, visiting the duty free store in Iceland goes without question. With the changes, there is now a massive duty free store next to baggage claim. While, in the past, you did duty free and then went down to baggage clain. Now you can go directly to baggage claim and do shopping while waiting for the bags to show up.

When completed, the "north area" will almost double the size of the old terminal area.

The security check now has 2 lines, and will be moved to the 2nd floor this spring.

Thus, there is a lot of construction going on, but when it is done, the KEF airport will have a great deal more to offer.
