Seismic Activity in Iceland

Been paying attention to the ongoing seismic activity in the Icelandic Reykjanes peninsula. I wasn't far from this area during my trips there. The potential for a transition to volcanic activity seems good. There is a geothermal plant and the Blue Lagoon thermal spas in this area. Iceland's primary international airport (KEF) is located nearby to the northwest. Anyone have family or friends in the area that can report on conditions?

A friend is attending university in Reykjavik. Her husband is Japanese and they have lived in Japan off and on for their entire marriage (just an fyi so you understand her familiarity with earthquakes). The earthquakes are a daily occurrence and have been strong enough and unusual enough for her to actually mention it. The locals think the Blue Lagoon, geothermal plant, and the airport will be fine, but that the road to the airport would be impacted if the volcano they are watching erupts.

A massive volcano eruption in Iceland and TATL travel could again get severely disrupted. Even taking it that it won't be caused by the volcano highlighted in the BBC video above.

Locals are saying that even if this should turn into a volcano at the expected location they don't anticipate significant disruptions to life except in the immediate area of the volcano. Blue Lagoon has been closed due to the activity, it's much closer than the city or airport are.

I heard that KEF flights were disrupted due to that volcano eruption and there were signs of road traffic around KEF being limited. However, KEF-CPH with FI 204 seems to have made it out this morning anyway, with FI 205 at CPH having a gate assignment to fly back to KEF within 45 minutes or less from now.

Considering how close this is to the city, it's amazing how uninhabited the immediate area is.

Often you can see people in the foreground and background and helicopters, and even ship on the distant hillside

Iceland's got Wyoming-level population density, so most everywhere is uninhabited by people.

More seriously, people tend to settle in clusters where it is more habitable and other people and services are available, which in Iceland's case means that about 2/3 of Iceland's people live in just it's capital region and that too in parts that have historically made sense from experienced natural geography reasons to governance/ownership dynamics.

It's not uncommon for airports to be given the "cheap land" removed from more populated neighborhoods as traffic grows. People tend to not like airplane noise. RKV has almost no service compared to KEF, and RKV is in a more densely inhabited place than even KEF. This volcano is closer to KEF than it is to RKV.
