I arrive at 1220 on a Monday in early June and depart at 1930 that night. Is that enough time to do something interesting (preferably exploring the city and mingling with the people rather than going to a museum or the like)?
Definitely go into city. take the Finnair-bus for like 6 euros. Theres a few euros cheaper citybus, nro 615, which takes 10-15 minutes longer.
Hi,
In June , take a ferry to Suomenlinna island with its old fortress.
Lots of good suggestions here;

If you have any carry-on luggage to store, there are automated lockers and also a baggage check on the arrivals level. The locker machine take U.S. credit cards (you can also pay for the Finnair bus with credit cards - you buy your ticket as you board the bus),Originally Posted by Helsinki Flyer

I would consider the Kiasma museum of contemporary art in central Helsinki a must see - and you can even see people there - but if you aren't into museums...
Have a beer or two (Grades 3 or 4 please if you want something drinkable) at the Zetor bar - everything's made of Zetor tractor parts - or a quick browse in Stockmann's department store ... great souvenirs plus Aalto glass.
You will have around 5 hours downtown (taken into account bus transfer (35 min each way) and check-in deadlines. Helsinki is quite compact, you will be able to do a lot of exploring in that time.
Stroll the small park of Esplanad (Esplanadparken/Esplanadin puisto) and the streets around. Early june is just before main tourist season, and it is not that crowded, but downtown is still your best mingle opportunities!
Grab a snack (maybe a reindeer salad) at the "Kauppahalli" (market hall). It is right by the docks, looks like a small railroad station.
