Norway in a Nutshell question
Since time in Norway will be short, I'm wondering if it's possible to take the Oslo-Bergan train PART of the way only-- from Oslo to Myrdal, up to Flam, onto a boat to Aurland on the Sognefjord, then around to Gudvangen to catch the bus to Voss, and then a return train to Oslo. I read about this and I'm wondering if it can be done as a day trip. It will be two 20-year-old guys making the trek, and they're able to move along at a quick pace, if necessary.

We did it on our own last year
Train to Myrdal, Flam train, boat to Gudvagnen, public bus to Voss, and an overnight train back to Oslo, and off to airport to catch morning flight.
Ironically the Voss-Oslo Airport ticket was same price as just Voss-Oslo C.
We bought train tickets online a couple weeks before as it was summer.

We also did exactly this. No problem. We did buy the ticket online, and picked it up in the main train station in Oslo. It wasnt cheap. It was also alot of sitting, and a long day starting smoething like rising at 5am for a 6am train. I think it would be better done over a few days with a stop or two along the route, but if this is your only stop in Norway, and you arent sure you'll be back, do it.
It looks like the kind of trip that would be nice to do over a week or more, stopping a day or two here and there along the way.

Thanks for the quick replies. I'm actually researching this for my son and his friend who are over in France right now. Since they'll be having just a short stay with a friend in Oslo, I'm trying to figure out a way for them to get a fjord photo op in a day trip from there. Are there any other alternatives or is NIAN (only part way, not all the way to Bergen) the way to go?
Also, I'm wondering approx. how many Euros we're talking about-- if they were to do the previously mentioned train/boat/bus/train trip, and approx. how many hours it would take. Sorry for the added questions, but I know that money and time will be my son's two biggest concerns.

Train, ferry and bus bought separably would break down to something like this:
- Trains can be between 398 NOK/rtn and 1400 NOK/rtn (USD 72 and USD 250), per person. A sleeping cabin will be a fixed price at 850 NOK (USD 155) for up to two persons. Can be bought at www.nsb.no.
- A guesstimate on the ferry and bus would be 400 NOK (USD 70). Ferry time table and buss time table.
Travellers by train in Norway should be aware that extensive engineering work is planned in the Oslo area through this summer. In fact, between 26 June and 8 August all of the Oslo area will be closed for train traffic. All trains originating or terminating in Oslo will be partially be by bus. Further reading NSB: The Oslo area is closed for train traffic during the period 26 June - 8 August 2011
