Accommodation for 4 in Oslo

My partner and I and a friend from work (and his partner) will be heading to Oslo for 2 nights mid-December and are looking at reasonable (read: cheap as possible) accommodation.

Are we likely to get a better deal with a 2 bedroom apartment vs 2 hotel rooms? I've found varying degrees in terms of pricing and quality.

Check the Thon Hotels website - they offer a good range of accommodations at different price points (be sure to look for their web-only rates), along with a good choice of locations:

Looks like about 70 pounds per night (for 2 people, so 35 pounds each), which I think is about what we were expecting. Any experience with specific hotels?

I know the Thon Opera (due to its location at the Main Station and across from the Opera House). It's good; however, as Thon lists it within their "Conference' level, it won't be the least expensive.

FT member Fornebufox mentions the Thon Astoria in post #7 of this previous thread:

I too know the Thon Opera in Oslo & regard it as one of the best hotels I've ever stayed at. Superb location (especially for the train traveller), wonderful breakfast and great rooms etc.

I usually try to stay there on Friday & Saturday nights. Being a "Business" hotel, there are great savings to be made these nights when the "Suits" leave town!!!

I ended up booking a secret hotel on lastminute.com which turned out to be http://www.scandichotels.com/sjolyst ; it's a little out of town but should be easy enough to get to the main places we want to see by bus/metro. Now to just work out the most efficient way of doing so (and getting there from RYG)!

Normally bus is easiest from RYG, but you can also do the train, via a bus shuttle. If you are lucky the train will continue past Oslo central station and then you exit at Sjlyst (second stop from central), next to hotel. Worst case change train, but same ticket.

Plenty of buses to the hotel + a tram line, but no metro.
