Sightseeing ideas with the elderly

I will be in NYC Labor Day weekend with my in-laws (3 full days and 4 nights in Manhattan). They are both in their 50's so they may not be up to walking too much in the heat and humidity. Any suggestions? Personally, I usually just walk the town. They typically stay up very late and are not morning people. However, there will be four adults and one 4-year-old child, which I think is the limit for taxi's (5). Any advice would be helpful. One day we are renting a car in Manhattan to do the Woodbury Premium Outlet and returning the car to EWR for the return trip home.

"elderly" and "50s" don't compute for me.

You can ride the Staten Island ferry (for free). Great way to kill an hour roundtrip; and, have a close up look at NY Harbors Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, and of course, lower Manhattan.

My favorite passtime: eating. Seriously, eat at the Boathouse Restaurant in Central Park. Nice views of the lake, and loads of people watching.

Chinatown and Little Italy are really one neighborhood. If you head down there in the evening (to eat) you'll enjoy a nice NY vibe.

So, let's think of some folks in their "50"s. No, wait, let's think of some folks in their 60's.
Cher
Goldie Hawn
Stallone
Paul McCartney
Al Pacino
Robert DeNiro
George W. Bush
Bill Clinton
Colin Powell
Placido Domingo
Kurt Masour
Tom Wolfe
Vanessa Redgrave
George Foreman
Jack Nicholson
Warren Beatty
Robert Redford
Tina Turner
Patti LaBelle
Diana Ross
Richard Cheney
Diane Keaton
Stephen Spielberg

Well, I guess I could go on and on. I don't think that these folks who are in their 60's would consider themselves "elderly" for the purpose of travel--let alone-- folks in their "50's."
Speaking of those in their "50's:" Martina Navitrolova is 51 and I think she is moving pretty well & could likely handle a trip to NYC

If you really think that 50's are "elderly"you might want to consider visiting some assisted living places in the city. Not for them but you will be there much sooner than you think and it is good to plan ahead.

I can give the "elderly" lists of places that dont start until after 11pm that are full of 30's to 80's in the city that dance together till 4am..

free: sunday night So Street Seaport dancing only goes to 1am.. they might be able to handle that while you rest.

I'm in my 30s and I despise the heat and humidity too. And I live here!!

Unless you get a taxi with two rows of back seats (minivan), you will need to take 2 taxis. 5 adults and a child in one sedan? Do you have a car seat for the child when you drive at home? Do you think your child doesn't need the same protection in a NYC taxi? Go to the Metropolitan Museum. It's wonderful for all ages. And you can pay whatever you like. Staten Island Ferry is a great idea. Follow that advice.

There are people in their 50's who act elderly, and there are people in their 80's who don't, it's more than just carrying an AARP card.

Circle line can be good (take the half trip, the entire city trip can get boring), If they are baseball fans the Yankees are at home that weekend playing the Mariners, tickets are available, neither requires much walking once you get there.

You will certainly walk more in Woodbury than in the city, it's very sparead out.

Take the poor old things clubbing.
Have had a couple of trips to North Africa with my over-90 year old father recently - we went dune-buggying, camel riding, walking in the heat (miles and MILES) and he seemed to cope pretty well.

Of course I was being sarcastic in that posting but I don't like using smilies. Grandma actually can carry the grandson on her shoulders for very long distances and when grandpa is not working fulltime he performs manual labor jobs in most of his spare time so this trip is a unique opportunity to not have to work. I hope to go clubbing but without the in-laws. Staten Island Ferry sounds like a plan. Any of those silly bus tour make sense? Their English is not 100% so I am not sure how much they will get out of the narration.

For the life of me I could not find Vietnamese. Does such a thing exist?

"Elderly" does not have to mean "boring:"

Am I the only one that thinks that this is a waste of time and money? I've never been to the Woodbury Outlets; are they any different than the outlet malls one finds everywhere in the country?

As for other options, buying a ticket to one of the hop-on, hop-off tour buses might be a good idea. My understanding is that they take you to all of the major tourist areas, and you can get off at any point, walk around for as long as you want, and then grab another bus to go to the next stop or to take you back to where you started.

Go to the Met Museum. Easily can spend couple of hours indoors. You can even have afternoon drinks / tea on Sat. Then walk around in Central Park.

No you are not.. Why anyone would even think of this on a trip to NYC is astonishing.. but so is the entire post, nor do I see anyway that sarcasasm could be read into the original post.
